The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 beats the Kirin 9010 by a good margin in our comparison (read it here). But can Huawei’s flagship chip survive against the 3-year-old Snapdragon 888 chip?

Read this detailed comparison to understand if it’s worth spending on a Kirin 9010 or if getting a Snapdragon 888-powered phone is still a better option.

Overview

The Snapdragon 888 SoC is a powerful chip from Qualcomm. It was found in flagship phones during its early days and is now in premium mid-range phones. Huawei’s Kirin 9010, on the other hand, is said to be a flagship chip but has disappointing benchmarking numbers to put it in the flagship category.

Here’s a quick comparison table to begin with:

Feature

Kirin 9010

Snapdragon 888

Process Node

7nm (SMIC)

5nm (Samsung)

CPU Cores

1 x 2.3 GHz Taishan Big
3 x 2.18 GHz Taishan Mid
4 x 1.55 GHz Cortex-A510

1 x 2.84 GHz Cortex-X1
3 x 2.42 GHz Cortex-A78
4 x 1.8 GHz Cortex-A55

GPU

Maleoon 910 @ 750 MHz

Adreno 660 @ 792 MHz

RAM

–

Up to 24GB LPDDR5 @ 3200 MHz

5G

Yes

Yes

Download/Upload Speed

–

Up to 7500 Mbps/3000 Mbps

SMIC produces the 7nm Kirin 9010 chipset for Huawei, whereas the Snapdragon 888 uses a 5nm fabrication process. Increased transistor density in Snapdragon 888 allows for lower power consumption for the same level of performance compared to the Kirin 9010.

All the cores in Snapdragon 888 run at a higher clock speed than Kirin 9010’s, which means it can better handle high processing-intensive tasks. However, other metrics, such as thread management, storage speed, and software optimization, also influence the overall performance.

Although the Adreno 660 GPU in Kirin 9010 runs at a lower clock speed than the Snapdragon 888’s, the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme benchmark results tell a different story.

Let’s now look at how these two chipsets perform on various benchmarking platforms.

Benchmarks

Kirin 9010 SoC:

AnTuTu v10: 972,547

Geekbench v6 (single-core): 1,446

Geekbench v6 (multi-core): 4,524

3DMark Wild Life Extreme: 1,531

Snapdragon 888 SoC:

AnTuTu 10: 892,658

Geekbench v6 (single-core): 1,498

Geekbench v6 (multi-core): 3,948

3DMark Wild Life Extreme: 1,498

The Kirin 9010 (7nm) is able to beat the Snapdragon 888 (5nm) in multiple benchmarking tests, but the difference is not significant. Keep in mind that the benchmarking tests do not reflect real-world performance.

Kirin 9010 vs Snapdragon 888: Final Thoughts

Kirin 9010 and Snapdragon 888 are high-performance mobile chipsets performing similarly on benchmarking platforms. Both can handle games and high-performance tasks; therefore, picking one becomes difficult.

Things that go in Snapdragon 888’s favor include its use of a 5nm processor node, which is better than 7nm on Kirin 9010. Another critical point to mention here is that Huawei hasn’t revealed the chip details, so many details are under the cover. However, according to multiple reports, the Kirin 9010 is nothing but a slightly modified version of the Kirin 9000s. So, based on these reasons, I’d pick the Snapdragon 888 over the Kirin 9010.

Huawei has launched the Pura 70 series as a successor to the Kirin 9000s. The new chip has been tested with both benchmarks and real-life workloads and has performed better than expected with no overheating. The new chip is recognized as the Kirin 9010, which according to TechInsights, is fabricated on SMIC’s second-generation 7nm-class process node, which is also referred to as N+2. Notably, this is the same process technology that the predecessor Kirin 9000s is built on.

Huawei improving its chip supply chain with in-house manufacturers

For those unfamiliar, SMIC is China’s largest contract chipmaker like TSMC for the global market. Based on the limited supply of the Pura 70 series devices, it is expected that the production capacity of the new Kirin chip is likely still limited. However, a new flagship model with a successor chip is a sign that Huawei is slowly solving bottlenecks in its chip supply chain amidst all the US sanctions with in-house alternatives to overseas components. But how SMIC manages to fabricate the chips without access to overseas tools and technologies is still shrouded in mystery.

According to reports, the new Kirin 9010 chip boasts a similar core cluster to its predecessor – an “ultra-high performance” TaiShan Prime Core, three TaiShan mid cores, and four efficiency-focused Arm Cortex-A510 cores.

The successor actually runs the ultra-high performance core at a lower 2.3GHz clock speed as compared to the 2.62GHz of the Kirin 9000s. It equips the Maleoon 910 GPU. The Kirin 9010 can also be considered a variant of the Kirin 9000s that has a higher yield rate as compared to the predecessor.

Nonetheless, the Kirin 9010 appears to have better computing power despite a lower clock speed of the performance core. The new chip scored 1440 and 4436 in single and multi-core GeekBench tests respectively. For reference, the Kirin 9000s scored 1350 and 4200 in the respective tests.

A chipset is like the heart of a device, and therefore, it’s always a crucial decision to pick the best one. It is not just the performance; the chip also decides other parameters, such as the maximum camera resolution, RAM, and screen resolution the device supports.

Today, we’ll put the Huawei Kirin 9010, the company’s latest flagship chip, up against Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile chip – Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Explore the comparison to pick the best flagship chip for a stellar performance.

Feature

Kirin 9010

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Fabrication Process

7nm

4nm

CPU Cores

1 x Taishan Prime Core @ 2.30 GHz
3 x Taishan Middle Core @ 2.18 GHz
4 x Cortex-A510 @ 1.55 GHz

1 x Cortex-X4 @ 3.3 GHz
3 x Cortex-A720 @ 3.15 GHz
2 x Cortex-A720 @ 2.96 GHz
1 x Cortex-A520 @ 2.27 GHz

GPU

Maleoon 910 @ 750 MHz

Adreno 750 @ 770 MHz

Kirin 9010 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3: Performance

Huawei hasn’t revealed the Kirin 9010 spec sheet, and it’s unlikely to do that in the near future. The new Kirin 9010 chip is nothing but the polished version of the Kirin 9000S found in the Huawei Mate 60 series.

For some reason, Huawei has underclocked the Kirin 9010’s prime core, which operates at 2.30 GHz (vs 2.62 GHz in Kirin 9000S). However, the three middle cores and the last four power-efficient cores get a slight clock bump.

The clock speeds of Kirin 9010 cores are nowhere near that of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s. Even the power-efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 core operates at a higher clock speed than Kirin 9010’s middle cores.

The Kirin 9010 is fabricated using a 7nm technology, whereas the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 uses a 4nm fabrication process, resulting in better power efficiency.

The Snapdragon chip also has a faster GPU. The core architecture of the Kirin 9010 is believed to be similar to the Kirin 9000S.

Kirin 9010 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3: Benchmark

Geekbench v6:

Kirin 9010 (single-core): 1442

Kirin 9010 (multi-core): 4471

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (single-core): 2170

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (multi-core): 6777

AnTuTu:

Kirin 9010: 979511

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3: 2114718

These numbers themselves tell the story. There’s a significant performance gap between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Kirin 9010 chipsets, with the Snapdragon one leading the race.

However, the Kirin 9010, despite having an underclocked prime core, is able to beat the Kirin 9000S in benchmarks by a small margin. But, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is far ahead in the race.

Kirin 9010 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3: Games

The benchmarking numbers for the Huawei Kirin 9010 SoC are terrifying, but it does better than that in the real world. The Huawei P70 Ultra, powered by the same chip, was able to handle Genshin Impact fairly well.

The device resulted in an average frame rate of 60.2fps when running the same game at the highest settings with 60fps locked and the frame rate boosting feature turned off. The frame rate remained stable at around 60fps for the initial 10 minutes before dropping to 55.7fps over the next 15 minutes. The phone’s temperature reached a maximum of 46.8 degrees during the test.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, on the other hand, smoothly handles Genshin Impact and other resource-demanding titles while maintaining a 60fps stable frame rate. Secondly, the phone doesn’t get as warm as phones powered by the Kirin 9010 SoC.

Conclusion

While both Kirin 9010 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 are termed as flagship chipsets, there’s a lot of difference between them. In fact, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 beats the Huawei’s Kirin 9010 in every aspect. So, if you had to pick one of these two, it should be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The benchmarks reveal the Kirin 9010 is more of an incremental upgrade than a huge leap forward.

This isn’t entirely surprising considering the Kirin 9010 seems to be a polished version of the Kirin 9000S found in the Mate 60 series. It features a single 2.3GHz Taishan core, three 2.18GHz Taishan mid-cores, and four lower-clocked 1.55GHz Cortex-A510 cores, designed to handle less intensive tasks.

The core architecture is essentially similar to the Kirin 9000S of the Mate 60. The notable difference lies in Huawei’s adjustments to the clock speeds of the cores. Meanwhile, the graphics processing unit remains unchanged, sporting the same Mali-G78 GPU clocked at 750MHz.

Benchmarks

Starting with synthetic benchmarks, the AnTuTu score for the Pura 70 Ultra landed at 940,000 points. Whereas, in the GeekBench 6.2, the single-core scores reached 1,431 points, with multi-core scores reaching 4,430 points in a room temperature environment.

Enabling the phone’s performance mode resulted in minimal gains, pushing single-core scores to 1,440 and multi-core scores to 4,436. On paper, these scores are clearly better when compared to the Kirin 9000S.

Processor

Geekbench Single-Core

Geekbench Multi-Core

AnTuTu Overall

Kirin 9010

1440

4436

940,000

Kirin 9000s

1350

4200

700,000

Huawei has managed to achieve this even while lowering the clock speed of Kirin 9010’s high-performance core.

However, the GPU appears to be a sticking point, according to the report. 3DMark Wild Life EXTREME testing yielded scores of 1575 points at room temperature and 1577 points in cooling mode. It’s a limited improvement in graphical processing power.

Games

But the real-world testing shows that the phone can run popular games like Genshin Impact fairly well.

Running the game at the highest settings with 60fps locked and frame rate boosting features disabled, the Pura 70 Ultra managed an average frame rate of 60.2fps in a room-temperature environment.

The frame rate remained fairly stable at around 60fps for the first 10 minutes before dropping to a steady 55.7fps average over the remaining 15 minutes. The phone’s back cover reached a maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius during this test.

Another graphically demanding title, Honkai: Star Rail, pushed the Pura 70 Ultra further. Set to very high settings with 60fps locked, the phone averaged 53 frames per second over a 15-minute run.

The wait is over! Huawei’s highly anticipated Pura 70 series smartphones has finally been launched in China. The top-tier Huawei Pura 70 Pro+ and Ultra comes equipped with a brand new processor inside — the Kirin 9010.

While Huaewi remained mum about the processor details, users in China who already got their hands on the phone are sharing details about the Kirin 9010.

A quick look at the processor reveals that the Kirin 9010 boasts a 12-core CPU with a 4+6+2 architecture. Here’s the breakdown:

4 efficiency cores running at 1.55 GHz

6 performance cores clocking in at 2.18 GHz

2 high-performance cores maxing out at 2.30 GHz

The core setup closely resembles that of the Kirin 9000 processors found in the Huawei Mate 60 series but with a few minor tweaks.

For instance, the Kirin 9010 has a slight bump in base clock speed for its efficiency cores compared to the Kirin 9000’s 1.53 GHz.

Furthermore, the performance cores’ clock speed sees a modest increase to 2.18 GHz from 2.15 GHz on the Kirin 9000. However, interestingly, the high-performance core takes a slight dip in clock speed compared to the Kirin 9000.

However, benchmark tests on Geekbench 6.2 show impressive results, with the Kirin 9010 outperforming the 9000s by a significant margin.

Despite these changes, on Geekbench 6.2, the processor achieves 1447 points in single-core tests and 4765 points in multi-core tests and surpasses the Kirin 9000s, which typically scores below 1350 points in single-core and maxes out around 4200 points in multi-core.

On AnTuTu (V10.2.4) benchmark, the Kirin 9010 achieves an overall score exceeding 970,000, with a CPU score exceeding 330,000 and a GPU score exceeding 190,000. It’s a significant jump from 700,000 points of the Kirin 9000s on Huawei Mate 60.

While the real-world performance of the new SoC is yet to be seen, it appears that Huawei has optimized the Kirin 9010 to perform exceptionally well, at least in benchmark tests.

Original Story

It has just been a few months since Huawei announced the Kirin 9000 processor. The chipset comes in two variants – the Kirin 9000 and Kirin 9000E – and is found only in the Mate 40 series. Now, a leaker has disclosed details about the next flagship Kirin processor which has been reported to be called the Kirin 9010.

The info about the new Kirin processor comes from the leaker @RODENT950, and according to a tweet posted today, the next-gen Kirin processor should arrive as the Kirin 9010 and it will be a 3nm chipset.

Next Gen Kirin(9010) is 3nm. pic.twitter.com/b6WtwdKt7r

— Teme (特米) (@RODENT950) January 1, 2021

The Kirin 9000 launched as the first 5nm processor for Android devices and after its announcement came the Samsung Exynos 1080 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. While most people will expect Huawei to stick to the 5nm process for at least two years, this leak reveals it is making the jump to 3nm for its next mobile chipset, which if all goes well, should launch this year and possibly appear in the Mate 50 series by the fourth quarter.

EDITOR’S PICK: Chip Battle: Snapdragon 888 versus Kirin 9000

We won’t be wrong to presume that other chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm will follow suit and also switch to 3nm for their next-generation flagship chipset if the news about Huawei’s 3nm chipset is true. Though the San Diego-based company is expected to announce a Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset later this year which should be a 5nm processor like its sibling but with a higher clock speed.

Samsung, on the other hand, has been reported to be skipping the 4nm process and jumping to 3nm. Apple is also expected to announce 3nm processors that will be built by TSMC but it is not expected to arrive until 2022. So there is a chance Huawei may be the first manufacturer to announce a 3nm chipset

Prior to the release of the 5nm Kirin chipset, there were reports that the Mate 40 may be the last Huawei flagship to be powered by a Kirin chipset processor but that will likely not be the case. The Huawei P50 phones are expected to come with Kirin 9000 processors and if Huawei is able to pull it off, then this year’s Mate series will come with the 3nm Kirin 9010.
