Now, the company has announced a new version of the device, dubbed Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2.

The first-generation product seemed like a proof of concept and after learning from the feedback, the company has announced this second-generation product. The company has upgraded or improved almost everything in this new device compared to its predecessor.

The highlight of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is its display. The device features a 16.3-inch foldable Samsung OLED display with a screen resolution of 2024 x 2560 pixels. It offers 600nit brightness, 100% DCI-P3, Dolby Vision, and On-cell Touch with Pen support.

When folded, the device shrinks to a 12-inch display and can be paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, making it feel like an actual laptop. For comparison, the original X1 Fold had a 13.3-inch display which shrinks to 8-inch when folded.

At CES 2019, Lenovo showcased what was claimed to be the “world’s first foldable PC.” The device showcased was merely a prototype but the Chinese giant is now set to release the product commercially, according to a teaser poster released recently.

Simply put, the ThinkPad X1 Fold is a full-featured notebook computer powered by an 11th-generation Core processor. The notebook packs a 13.3-inch touchscreen display with 2K resolution but it is only the size of a 16-open book.

The core secret of this design lies in Lenovo’s exclusive flexible technology, through which the screen foldable design is realized. The ThinkPad X1 Fold’s flexible OLED display screen is built by Lenovo and supplier LG in deep cooperation.

Lenovo and LG worked together to solve many technical problems in the four years it took to realise this technology. It deploys exclusive hinge technology and magnesium alloy-carbon fibre frame to realize a folding structure that is firm and flat after unfolding. The screen also feels like a traditional screen and meets durability test requirements.

We expect the pricing and availability details to be unveiled when it is officially released.

The preview of the ThinkPad X1 Fold reveals that Lenovo is making thin and light laptop even more portable. In the video, the laptop is seen being compared to cotton signifying its airy nature. Similarly, other items included a balloon, a feather, and even a 1000 grams weight. All of which were heavier than the laptop which according to Lenovo, weighs just 999 grams. This would make it very easy to carry around and use on the go.

However, there’s no confirmation about this development.

The teaser poster shared by the company reveals only one information about the foldable laptop — its weight. It is mentioned that the product weighs just 999 grams and the poster also includes a render of the laptop.

When the device was unveiled earlier this year, it was said to have a 13.3-inch flexible OLED display panel with a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio. There’s also a Microsoft’s Windows Hello-compatible camera on the bezel.

It is powered by a special Intel chipset which has not yet been specified but is said to have “hybrid technology”. The device packs 8GB of RAM and 1TB SSD storage and is equipped with a battery that promises 11 hours of usage on a single charge.

Since it’s a foldable laptop, both the top area and the bottom area have a display panel. It arrives with an additional wireless keyboard for those who prefer it, but users can use the laptop without attaching the keyboard.

In the software department, it is likely to come powered by the Windows 10 Pro operating system with the company’s own solutions and optimizations or the foldable screen. It remains to be seen if we will see anything related to the Windows 10X, which has been postponed by Microsoft, along with Surface Neo.

At the time of unveiling the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, the company had said that the shipments could start from mid-2020. It is priced at $2,499, which roughly converts to about 17,298 yuan in China.
