Market research agency Luotu Technology shared their findings at the UBI research conference held in Seoul, South Korea. The agency predicts that the MiniLED TV shipment this year will surpass the OLED TV shipment for the first time this year.

Credit: TCL

According to the research data, this year’s shipments of MiniLED TVs will be 6.8 million units, which is 0.4 million higher than the predicted OLED TV shipment for 2024. Notably, MiniLED TV shipments are catching up with OLED in the last few years.

Researcher Melissa Wang noted that OLED TV shipments decreased by 20.6% year-on-year in 2023, while MiniLED shipments saw a growth of 24.7% year-on-year for the same period. The shipment figures for OLED and MiniLED TVs last year were 5.48 AND 4.25 million units respectively.

Year

MiniLED TV shipment (million)

OLED TV shipment (million)

2021

2.3

6.5

2022

3.4

6.9

2023

4.25

5.48

2024

6.8

6.4

2025

10.2

7.1

2026

16.4

7.6

2027

21.6

8.1

2028

25.5

8.5

MiniLED TV shipments growing at a much faster pace than OLED

As you can see from the data, MiniLED TVs are expected to get more and more popular. While OLED TV shipments are also expected to grow, MiniLED TV shipments are predicted to grow exponentially and achieve a figure more than three times bigger than its competitor.

Currently, the MiniLED TV market is led by Samsung Electronics, TCL, and Hisense, While the OLED TV market is led by LG, Samsung, and Sony. The Elec notes that TV shipments from Samsung Electronics (which contributes to both of the technologies) will play a crucial role in shaping the future market share. MiniLED TVs such as the TCL C12H series or the Terrace TV from Samsung Electronics can offer higher contrast and improved brightness, thanks to their smaller diodes.

The report arrives from Omdia, a known market research based firm, with its finding being shared on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website) as well. Omdia added that OEMs are now shifting towards higher resolution image sensors for their rear modules that now house fewer number of cameras. The primary reason for this shift is reportedly due to the ongoing shortage of semiconductors that has affected various industries across the globe.

In the third quarter of this year, shipments of smartphones with triple camera setups rose to the same level as models with quad cameras. The triple camera segment got boosted as even low cost entry level handsets under 150 US Dollars saw a rise in adoption rate for multiple camera sensors on the rear. Meanwhile, the market share four devices with four cameras saw a decline, falling behind the triple camera phones. Interestingly, the market share of dual cameras which had been in decline for a while now, also saw a rise during this same period.

Jusy Hong, senior research manager of Omdia stated that this trend arrives as brands seek to reduce camera related costs caused by the continued shortage of semiconductors. He further added that smartphone brands are also reducing the number of cameras in mid range models from four to three. As of right now, the 48 megapixel lenses accounted for 25 percent of the entire market share in Q3 2021, while 64 megapixel and 108 megapixel sensors saw a rise to 19 percent and 5 percent share respectively.

According to TheElec report, new market research from Omdia has pointed out that up to 351 million units of automotive displays that were sized 9 inch or above were shipped during this period. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the demand had shrunk in the first half but recovered in the second half of the year. This growth in display demand was primarily carried by the center stack display (CDS), which is generally the control hub in a vehicle.

Back in 2020, the CSD shipments rose by 47 percent alone in comparison to 2019. Furthermore, this category also accounted for around 40 percent of the automotive display market in 2019 but has since risen to over 50 percent in 2020. In the final quarter of last year, CSD alone accounted for 56.5 percent of all automotive displays. Similarly, ICD (instrument cluster display) was also responsible for the growth, which also saw a rise of 11 percent and accounted for about 30 percent of the automotive display demand.

Furthermore, the report also found that only over 10 percent of all displays were automotive screens and that the increase in CSD and ICD shipments were thanks to the rise in autonomous driving and other safety features. Notably, 12.3 inch panels were the most popular size in this category of displays. The market research also predicts that the automotive display market will further recover in the second half of 2021.

Also, Samsung and Xiaomi account for 45 percent of smartphone market in India in Q3 2017.

According to Counterpoint’s market research for the third quarter of this year, Samsung has a market share of 23 percent. The South Korean company is closely followed by Xiaomi with a market share of 22 percent. In Q3 2016, Samsung and Xiaomi had respective market shares of 23 percent and 6 percent. Xiaomi’s strong performance in mid-range smartphone segment (Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000) has catapulted it to rival with Samsung in India.

Counterpoint Associate Director Tarun Pathak claims that Xiaomi accounts for three of the top 5 bestselling smartphones in the country. It appears that Xiaomi may soon dethrone Samsung to become the number smartphone brand in India. Vivo, OPPO and Lenovo are respectively placed on third, fourth and fifth positions on Counterpoint’s smartphone market research for Q3 2017.

This shows the dominance of Chinese smartphone brands in India. For the third consecutive quarter, their market share has remained more than 50 percent after they surpassed local brands in second half of previous year.

Reliance Jio that was commercially launched its 4G LTE network in September 2016 has not only significantly increased the mobile data consumption in India but also driven the demand for 4G enabled phones. It has been found that 97 percent of the smartphones shipped in Q3 2017 are LTE enabled devices. In a short span of less than a year, it has managed to add 100 million subscribers to its network and it is looking forward to adding another 100 million users with the launch of its LTE enabled JioPhone featurephone.

When it comes featurephone shipments, Samsung is leading the pack in Q3 2017 with a market share of 23 percent. ITEL, Micromax, HMD Global’s Nokia, and Lava make up the top five featurephone brands in India. The featurephone market has met with 22 percent (QoQ) with the arrival of handsets that are priced around Rs. 1,000 like the JioPhone and Nokia branded phones.

During the third quarter of 2017, the premium segment that includes smartphones costing more than Rs. 30,000 have met threefold growth (YoY) during Q3 2017. The market leaders in the premium segment are Apple, OnePlus and Samsung in the same quarter.
