Huawei could be planning on stealing Apple’s thunder for its first foldable iPhone. A new rumor suggests that the next-gen tri-folding Mate XTs model may launch in the same week as the iPhone 17 series, and even upstage the upcoming iPhone Fold in this one area. So read on to find out.

Huawei Mate XTs Outpricing the iPhone Fold?

So far, we’ve seen rumors of the Chinese tech giant’s Mate XT 2 phone. However, the latest reports and leaks from China (Via NotebookCheck) suggest that the next tri-folding model is the Mate XTs. This sounds similar to Mate Xs in the past. Huawei is reportedly planning to unveil this model on September 12 in China. In other words, it is arriving during the same week as the Apple iPhone 17 series.

Samsung is also expected to be working on a tri-folding Galaxy Z phone, while Apple’s first ever foldable iPhone may debut sometime next year. But despite being a seasoned player in the foldable segment, its new Mate XTs could outpace the iPhone Fold in the pricing department. The Cupertino based giant’s first foldable may launch for around 15,999 Yuan or about 2,225 US Dollars. However, the Mate XTs tri-folding phone may hit the shelves for about 20,000 Yuan (roughly 2,780 US Dollars).

At this price point, it is a true ultra premium smartphone that would likely interest enthusiasts with a lot of disposable income. In our previous report, the color variants of the new Mate XT tri-folding model, which could include Mystic Black, Auspicious Red, Crimson Purple, and Bright White. There are also rumors of a tougher UFG glass and satellite connectivity as well.

Huawei Mate XT showcased the next step in foldable smartphone design with an innovative tri-folding body. This made it offer a unique large screen experience. This premium foldable phone was only available in China, but now, a fresh certification has hinted at its global launch.

Huawei Mate XT spotted on UAE’s TDRA

The Chinese tech giant’s Mate XT smartphone was just spotted on the TDRA certification carrying the GRL-LX9 model number. Unfortunately, the database only lists the tri-folding smartphone and does not reveal any of its finer details like launch or availability. But it does confirm its imminent global release. In our report from September 2024, the Mate XT was rumored to launch in Q1 2025.

If this was true, then Huawei might release the Mate XT within the next two months. Since this device has already been released in China, we can expect it to offer identical specs as the Chinese variant. The Huawei Mate XT sports a 6.4-inch display that can be expanded to 7.9-inch (dual screen mode) and 10.2-inch (fully unfolded).

The screen is an OLED LTPO panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, 440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. Under the hood, it is equipped with the Kirin 9010 chip, which is paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage. A sizeable 5,600mAh battery pack powers this device along with support for 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

For optics, the Mate XT features a 50MP main sensor with an f/1.4~f/4.0 variable aperture and OIS, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto lens on the rear, while the front packs an 8-megapixel selfie shooter.

Huawei has finally announced the highly anticipated Mate XT Ultimate Design, marking a significant milestone in foldable device technology. As the world’s first tri-folding smartphone, the Mate XT stands out in a market dominated by traditional inward-folding devices.

We got a quick hands-on with the device after its launch in China, and here are our thoughts.

Revolutionary Triple Folding Design

The Mate XT’s unique tri-folding design allows for a substantially larger inner screen compared to its competitors. When unfolded, it boasts an impressive 10.2-inch 3K display, effectively transforming into a full-sized tablet. To complement this tablet-like functionality, Huawei offers an optional keyboard accessory as well.

The tablet is thin and light like other recent foldables on the market, but what’s different is that it folds in a Z shape instead of the traditional V. One side folds backwards while the other side folds towards the front. So folding the Mate XT will take some getting used to.

Despite its innovative folding mechanism, the Mate XT maintains a remarkably slim profile. When folded, it measures just 12.8mm in thickness—only marginally thicker than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6’s 12.1mm folded state.

The crease is visible and could be more obvious in long term use. We were impressed by the edges of the display, it was extremely thin, especially when compared with a similar sized tablet.

Good Camera System

The Mate XT features a versatile camera setup:

• Primary sensor: 50MP with variable aperture (f/1.4 to f/4.0)
• Ultrawide camera: 12MP
• Periscope telephoto: 12MP
• Front-facing camera: 8MP for selfies

Super Slim Battery Technology

One of the key factors enabling the Mate XT’s slim design is its advanced battery technology. The device incorporates a 5600mAh silicon carbon battery, which Huawei claims is one of the world’s thinnest. Despite its compact size, the battery supports up to 66W wired fast charging, ensuring users don’t have to compromise on battery life or charging speeds.

In our limited use, we could see the Huawei Mate XT represented a significant leap forward in foldable smartphone technology, offering a unique combination of a larger screen with enhanced portability.

It would be interesting to see how the foldable performs in everyday use, but Huawei’s definitely got our attention. The phone goes on sale officially from September 20 in China.
