The Volla Phone X23, the latest iteration of the Volla Phone project, is now available for purchase from Hallo Welt Systeme. As with its predecessors, the Volla Phone X23 is Google-free and boasts an open-source operating system. The device is launching with a choice of either Volla OS or Ubuntu Touch as its default software.

Under the hood, the Volla Phone X23 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, which has previously received favorable reviews in devices such as the Moto G72 and POCO M5. The X23 is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of expandable storage. It is powered by a large 5,000 mAh battery, which supports both 30 W wired and 15 W wireless charging, providing ample power to the phone. The device also features a 6.1-inch ‘U-Notch’ display with a resolution of 1,560 x 720 pixels. The X23 has a dual camera, consisting of a 48 MP primary camera, an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 16 MP front-facing camera. The Volla Phone X23 is expected to deliver sharp photos and videos with such a camera setup. The device’s dimensions are 160.9 x 80 x 12.2 mm, and it weighs 270 g.

Currently, the Volla Phone X23 is available for purchase in Europe for €522 (~$555), with either Volla OS or Ubuntu Touch pre-installed. However, Hallo Welt Systeme is offering a 10% discount on the device until March 19 with the code ‘VOLLAX23’. This discount brings the launch price down to €478.13 (~$508). Customers who pre-order the device can expect to receive it in May. It appears that Hallo Welt Systeme is only selling the device in Europe at the moment, but the company’s FAQ suggests that it will eventually become available on Indiegogo for customers in other regions.

There are indications that chipmaker, MediaTek plans to release its first 6nm G-series chip by the third quarter of the year. Inside sources say that the company plans to release the new chip based on the highly advanced 6nm manufacturing process to replace the Helio G96, which in itself, is a quite popular chipset.

Although, we are still in the realm of speculation as there is no official confirmation yet on the upcoming MediaTek chips, what we know at this time is that the chip is currently only referred to as Next-G and employs the same CPU configuration as the Helio G96. The Helio G96 is produced through the 12nm process which presents several restrictions, some of which have been overcome with the 6nm improved process. The new G-series 6nm chip will have two Cortex-A76 cores running above 2.0 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores powering at 2.0 GHz.

As per the performance capabilities of the new MediaTek chip, it is capable of handling cameras with resolutions up to 108MP, 2K video recording at 30fps, and a few other metrics similar to the latest G96 iteration. That may be true, as there are indications that the very first MediaTek 6nm chip will not support 5G network connectivity. Chinese phone maker, Doogee has also been mentioned as one of the first brands to debut the Next-G chip. For now, we await further details from official quarters on the product.

Gionee is not a new name to those familiar with android. They have actually got a large following in China and India and are the OEM for American phone company, BLU. The S6 Pro is their upcoming device.

Towards the end of last year,  Gionee released the all-metal Gionee S6 which by its specs can be classified as a mid-range device. With the new announcement, Gionee thinks it’s time the phone got an upgrade.

The S6 Pro will be wearing Gionee’s new logo and based on information on TENAA, while it will be getting an FHD AMOLED screen compared to the original S6 which has a 720p screen, it will retain the same 5.5″ screen size. RAM has been bumped up to 4GB and ROM will come in 32GB or 64GB variants. Gionee hasn’t settled on what SoC will be used but we might see the phone sporting a Snapdragon 652 or a Mediatek Helio P10. There is going to be a 13MP camera on the back which is slightly protruding and an 8MP front facing camera for those wonderful selfies.

The phone is fuelled by a 3130mAh battery and will come with Android Marshmallow with Gionee’s Amigo OS overlay. The S6 Pro will have 4G LTE and is expected to feature a USB Type-C port. Gionee has released teasers for the phone which confirms that the S6 Pro will launch on the 13th of June.

From the pictures, we can see that Gionee has ditched the capacitive buttons on the original S6 in favor of a physical home key which will also house a fingerprint scanner. Pricing still remains unknown.

Mediatek will be unveiling its brand new Helio P20 SoC later this year and details about the chip have already leaked out. According to the leak, the Helio P20 will be the first Mediatek chip to use TSMC’s 16nm process. Up till now, the semiconductor company used TSMC’s 28nm and 20nm processes for its mid-range and high-end chipsets. Even the world’s first deca-core CPU, Helio X20 uses a 20nm process. So, this will be the first time the company is moving forward to the much more efficient 16nm process.

Unlike previous rumors, which stated that the Helio P20 will come with a 10-core architecture, the new leak reveals an octa-core Cortex A53 design. The cores will be clocked at 2.3GHz instead of 2.0GHz on the Helio P10. The Helio P20 will support FHD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution screens, 24MP cameras and Cat. 6 LTE networks.

Further, the image reveals that the new chip will enhance CPU performance by up to 15 percent and GPU performance up to an impressive 50 percent. Also, the power consumption will be down by 25 percent, which is logical given that the chip is manufactured using a more efficient process. This means that the chip will bring higher performance with reduced power consumption on mid-range phones launching in the coming months.

Given that rumors about the Helio X20 overheating blame TSMC’s 20nm process for the issue, it’s good to see that MTK is finally moving on to a much smaller node. Both Samsung and Qualcomm had moved to the 14nm manufacturing process for its top chipsets last year when Mediatek decided to stick with the 20nm process even for its deca-core chip.

As for the release, the image shows that the Helio P20 will be released sometime in the Q3 2016 period. So, hopefully, we will be able to see smartphones powered by this chip before the end of 2016.

MWC 2015 has already started and we have seen some great announcements at the event like HTC One M9, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. However, before the event started in Barcelona, Spain, Mediatek decided to take things to the next level by announcing its Mediatek Helio X10 high-end chipset at a closed door event.

The Mediatek Helio X10 is the most advanced chipset from the company till date. This 64-bit octa-core Soc (2.2GHz) can support display refresh rates of 120Hz, which is double the rate used by current smartphone chips — 60Hz. At present, there are displays which can support this fast refresh rate, so its good to see that a chip can now facilitate this new tech.

With such super fast refresh rates, the overall user experience is taken to the next level. For example, scrolling through web pages will be a very smooth experience, without any visible motion blur. In fact, in the demo at the event, the videos shown were extremely sharp with zero motion blur, delivering a truly advanced viewing experience.

The new Helio X10 supports slow motion videos at an impressive 480 fps. This is twice the rate used by Apple’s iPhone 6 — 240fps, which means slo-mo videos will be much better using this chip. Further, this octa-core chip can take advantage of the cores in the GPU too during certain tasks, thanks to the company’s Core Pilot technology. Mediatek says that this will enhance the performance of the device to a great extent as well as reduce power consumption.

The company will also unveil a Mediatek Helio P series later in the year, where P stands for performance. However, it has not yet revealed the features or performance stats of this upcoming chipset line.

With this new chip range, Mediatek is looking to compete with current high end chips from rivals such as the Snapdragon 810 and the Exynos 7 series. Unfortunately, we still don’t have real performance details of the chip, so its best to wait and watch how good they are. Company says that the first line of the high-end Helio chip powered phones will be available by the end of the year. However, before that, we expect more information via leaks and other sources.
