Xiaomi officially announced the MIUI 12 custom ROM on April 27 during the Mi 10 Youth launch event. Less than 10 days after, the company has now launched the MIUI 12 Pilot Testing Program for the Redmi K20 Series and it is global recruitment. 

The Redmi K20 series was listed among the first batch of models to get MIUI 12 when it was first announced. The recruitment is open to users of the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro. Both models make up the K20 series released last year as Redmi’s first flagship smartphones. We expect the company to expand the list of eligible devices in the coming weeks.

Interested owners of the K20 models have until May 14, 9 PM IST to apply for the pilot testing program. Since this is for a beta version, expect the software to contain bugs. So, it isn’t advisable to install on your primary device.

The new MIUI 12 brings Dark Mode 2.0, revamped control centre, battery app, file manager, Notes app, calendar app, and more. It also comes with new themes, Always on Display and several features.

Xiaomi is yet roll out the global version of MIUI 12, but that may likely be done on May 8 when it takes the centre stage in India to unveil the Mi 10 and other products.

Xiaomi unveiled MIUI 12 earlier this week with an overhauled UI and new features. The company even rolled out closed beta updates to all the eligible devices on the launch day itself. Within a week, the firm managed to seed two more beta builds for almost all the supported handsets. That means some of the phones are currently receiving MIUI 12 Beta 3 builds.

It is very impressive of Xiaomi to roll out a total of three MIUI 12 Beta builds to the eligible smartphones in a week. However, do note that not all the supported device has received new builds after the initial build from the lunch day. Still, it is a remarkable achievement.

Normally, the Chinese smartphone maker releases new MIUI beta builds every Friday. In the case of MIUI 12, Beta 1 was released on 27th May (Monday), followed by Beta 2 on the very next day (Tuesday the 28th). Later, on 30th (Thursday), few of the handsets even received Beta 3.

All the MIUI 12 Closed Beta builds released so far are available as both Recovery ROM and incremental OTAs. Since they are limited to China, interested global users must have a supported phone with unlocked bootloader and TWRP recovery to install them.

Having said that, Xiaomi is yet to announce MIUI 12 for international markets. The list of eligible devices and update timeline shared by the company are only applicable to China.

Xiaomi released MIUI 11 just a few months back and now reports have already started popping up regarding the next iteration of the company’s Android skin called MIUI 12. One of the latest leaks includes an alleged release timeline, whereas a new report suggests the development to begin as soon as next week.

According to a Mi Community post titled ‘MIUI 12 Official and Update Schedule’, which has been now taken down, the first private beta builds of MIUI 12 will be released in September, followed by public beta builds from October. Lastly, the stable release is expected to begin in December. However, it is important to note that this information was posted by a profile with a tag ‘Mi Influencer’. And therefore, it is highly recommended to digest this MIUI 12 release schedule with a pinch of salt.

On the other hand, the changelog of the latest MIUI in-test development build mentioned something big to be announced next week. Now, when users in China search on the official MIUI website to participate in the beta program, the ‘Not Found’ error dialog prompt mentions ‘MIUI 12’ suggesting the big announcement scheduled for next week is indeed to do something about MIUI 12. Hopefully, we will get more official information directly from Xiaomi itself, unlike the above-alleged update schedule.

As per previous rumors, the MIUI 12 is expected to bring features like more refined system-wide dark mode, new GUI, support for 16:9 aspect ratio displays, and more.
