Xiaomi begins recruiting Pilot Testers before the Global MIUI 12.5 launch on February 8

Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the next MIUI version, i.e, the MIUI 12.5 Globally. The launch, which is scheduled for February 8, will also see the 2021 flagship Mi 11’s debut. Ahead of this, it has started the Global MIUI Pilot testers program.

Xiaomi, in a community post, shared the details of the program along with the eligible devices list. You can take a look at the list below:

If you recall, the MIUI 12.5 launched on December 28, 2020, in China. The company has already started testing the Chinese version and released the first batch of updates. Amidst reports of a slight suspension in China Beta ROMs between Feb. 8-19, the company has begun the Global Pilot Testing program to test the Stable Beta builds.

If you are a Global user of any of the devices above, visit this link to apply and submit the required details including the correct IMEI number of your device and Mi Account details. To get the IMEI number, open the phone dialer and type *#06#. The last date for registration is March 1.

Xiaomi also includes a few Notes for the pilot testers. Since the update will be rolled out via OTA, you need to be on a Global Stable ROM while applying to avoid any hiccups. Further, you should be 18/18+ yrs of age, know the tricks to recover the phone (in case of flashing issues). Also, do note that devices like India’s Redmi K20(which is Mi 9T Globally) are also on the list.

Generally, MIUI China and Global Versions have few differences. Hence, let’s wait till Feb. 8 to know what Xiaomi brings for the Global audience. Meanwhile, you can look at the MIUI 12.5 China features.

Xiaomi recruiting MIUI closed beta testers for Poco F1, Mi 6 & Redmi 6/6A

Earlier this month, Xiaomi announced that it would end MIUI Global beta program by July. As we step into the month of July, steps are already in place to still push Global ROM to MIUI users but this time, it will be Stable ROM directly. However, the company has announced that it is recruiting closed beta testers of the MIUI Global stable ROM for some specific models. The models include the flagship Pocophone F1 and Mi 6 as well as the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A.

Xiaomi may have decided to thread this path due to the fact that too many users were consciously or through actions of third-party resellers using beta builds on a daily basis. Thus, only the MIUI Stable ROM will be available to the generality of MIUI users. However, to ensure that only a more fluent and bug-free ROM is available to users, the company has decided to subject the Stable ROM to scrutiny by a mass of committed beta testers to iron-out issues. Hence, this closed beta recruitment. In fact, there are even more rules to follow in this closed beta circle than the public one, since you are actually expected to contribute with feedback.

Interested MIUI users can apply via the source link regardless of your region. he recruitment will close on July 7. Some of the rules and requirements include a good command of English, an unlocked bootloader, the latest version of MIUI Stable on the phone and familiarity with the QQ messenger.

Xiaomi phones pre-installed with MIUI China ROM no longer support Global ROM

Xiaomi‘s MIUI custom ROM is one of the few Android-based custom skin that is available in more than two versions. OnePlus also releases more than one Custom ROM versions. There is the Hydrogen OS for China and Oxygen OS for the global market. While Xiaomi’s MIUI is available in China and Global ROM with subcategories like Developer and Stable ROM in both versions. There are indications that Mi phones manufactured specifically for the Chinese market won’t be able to run MIUI Global ROM and vice versa.

Until recently when the company started expanding rapidly into new markets like India, Indonesia, Spain, Russia and others, most Xiaomi phones sold outside China run MIUI China ROM. Since Google services are banned in China, manufacturers usually remove them before shipping. Millions of Mi phones sold outside China were sold by third-party retailers who re-install Google frameworks and apps. Users then sometimes flash the China ROM to install the Global ROM themselves so as to get regular updates. That practice still continues even till now when Xiaomi phones are sold by Xiaomi or through authorized agents in most regions. Perhaps, the latest move is to discourage such. The information as shared on MIUI forum stated clearly that;

1. Xiaomi Phones manufactured for (the) Chinese market are not able to run MIUI Global ROM.
2. Xiaomi Phones manufactured for Global markets are not able to run MIUI China ROM.

The official statement then recommended that buyers should purchase Xiaomi phones via official or authorized sales channels. In addition, users should double check the system information before flashing or updating. The ultimate result of not verifying could be bricking of the smartphone. There could be a way around this by first unlocking the phone’s bootloader before flashing, but we can’t confirm if flashing across both China and Global ROMs will work with an unlocked bootloader.
