The Nintendo Switch 2 is nearing its release, but the competition is getting tougher. MSI has just announced the new Claw A8 handheld gaming console that features AMD’s latest Ryzen APUs for improved gaming performance. So here’s everything you need to know.

MSI Claw A8: What’s new?

MSI announced the Claw A8 and a new Claw 8 AI+ Polar Tempest Edition during the ongoing Computex 2025. To recall, the Claw 8 AI+ was previously announced with the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor. Meanwhile, the Claw A8 arrives with AMD’s newest Ryzen Z2 Extreme APU (with Radeon graphics). This processor is paired with up to 24GB of LPDDR5X 8000MHz RAM and 1TB of PCIe NVMe SSD storage.

On the front, you get an 8-inch IPS LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate, FHD+ resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, touchscreen support, variable refresh rate, 500 nits of peak brightness, and 100 percent sRGB color gamut. For audio, there is a twin 2W speaker setup. A large 6-cell 80Whr battery pack powers this model. Other notable features include Bluetooth 5.3, WiFi 6E, Windows 11 OS, a 3.5mm audio jack, a microSD card reader, and a 765g body.

On the other hand, Claw 8 AI+ Polar Tempest Edition is basically a new variant of the existing Claw 8 AI+, but in a new white design that features a glossy UV coating. Unfortunately, MSI has yet to announce the official pricing and availability details of the Polar Tempest Claw 8 AI+ or the Claw A8. But the Claw A8 might be positioned below the Claw 8 AI+ as the latter has the newer Intel WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 chips.

The MSI Claw is powered by the Intel Core Ultra processor with an integrated Intel Arc GPU. It has a 7-inch Full HD touchscreen display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 100% sRGB coverage for vibrant colors and smooth gameplay.

MSI, a prominent name in gaming solutions and laptops celebrated the 20th anniversary of its laptops with a major event at Infinity Mall in Malad, Mumbai on June 21 and June 22. The celebration featured an exhibition showcasing some of the brand’s most innovative products, attracting over 2,000 attendees who experienced MSI’s latest advancements firsthand.

MSI showcases its product portfolio in India

India remains MSI’s top-performing market in Asia, prompting the company to announce plans for further expansion. Currently, MSI operates in three main categories in India, such as Gaming, Creators, and B&P series. Among these, gaming products lead in sales. The brand aims to double its growth by the end of 2024.

MSI has 30 laptop experience centres in key cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Pune, and plans to increase this number to 50 by the year’s end. Additionally, due to the rising popularity of high-end laptops featuring the RTX 4070 and above, MSI intends to expand its range from 200 to 300 SKUs by the end of 2025.

MSI Claw, which is the company’s first handheld gaming PC, will be available for purchase soon in India. It is expected to go on sale this month (June) in the country. To recall, it was announced in March in the country.

As part of the 20^th anniversary celebration, MSI announced a strategic partnership with Croma, one of India’s leading electronics retailers, to expand its retail presence. This collaboration will be rolled out across 35 key Croma stores in regions including Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Hyderabad.

Besides its experience centres, MSI products are available on Flipkart, Amazon, Croma, and Reliance Digital. The brand currently has a presence in metro and tier I cities and aims to expand further into tier II cities. MSI plans to enhance its experience centres to provide a more immersive and interactive customer experience.

At CEW 2024, MSI stepped into the handheld gaming console arena with the launch of its MSI Claw A1M console. The console comes in two processor choices: the Intel Core Ultra i5 135H and the Core Ultra i7 155H.

The base model, priced at $699, is already listed for pre-order on MSI’s website and is scheduled to ship on March 12, 2024. Details regarding the availability of the higher-tier models are yet to be announced, but with the shipping date close at hand, announcements are anticipated soon.

Each Claw model boasts a 7-inch FHD (1920×1080) IPS touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The systems are uniform in memory, featuring 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM at 6400MHz. For connectivity, they include the latest Intel Killer BE Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring high-speed wireless connections.

Storage options vary by model, with the higher-end featuring a 1TB NVMe SSD and the base model a 512GB NVMe SSD, both using the Gen4x4 2230 interface for fast data transfer. All models offer rich audio with 2 x 2W speakers and support a range of peripherals through a Type-C USB port with DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 4 capabilities, as well as a Micro SD card reader.

The devices are designed to be portable, measuring 11.57″ x 4.60″ x 0.83″ in dimensions and weighing in at just 1.44 lbs. They are powered by a 6-cell 53Whr battery and come with a 65W power adapter. MSI also provides a 1-year global warranty for the Claw series.

At CES 2024, MSI announced the Claw handheld gaming console. It competes against the ASUS ROG Ally, Steam Deck, Lenovo Legion Go, and more in the market. In an interview with IGN, MSI revealed its future plans in the handheld gaming segment along with few more details. The company is playing the long game. Read on to know everything below.

More iterations of MSI Claw confirmed

MSI confirmed that it will announce more iterations of the Claw handheld in the future. The company’s System Product Managing Director Clifford Chun revealed that they focussed on a 120Hz display on the device instead of OLED. The executive added that MSI may adopt an OLED panel on future versions of the Claw. The MSI Claw was in development for two years because the brand wanted to deliver a two-hour battery life and the Intel Core Ultra helped in achieving that. 

Commenting on the lifespan, Chun said that the MSI Claw aims to offer support for two to three years just like laptops. This is because game titles demand a lot more. The device can last for 10 years if users play retro games. The executive also added that MSI is anticipating version 2, version 3, version 4 of the Claw down the road and they are already said to be in the pipeline. The release window for future iterations is attributed to the CPU or graphic upgrade. 

The MSI Claw is also confirmed to feature Hall Effect joysticks and triggers for the best user experience. The handheld gaming console also has an AI engine just as MSI laptops. It changes the game mode to higher performance for higher frame rate and lower state while watching videos and preserving battery life.

The launch of the Steam Deck has breathed new life into the handheld gaming console market with many major players trying their hand at a new console. After the ASUS ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go, MSI is now preparing to launch a new handheld called the MSI Claw.

MSI has officially teased the device in China as well as through X (Twitter), revealing what it looks like. Now, some key specs of the console have also been unearthed via Geekbench listings. As per the Geekbench listing, the MSI Claw will be powered by the Intel Meteor Lake processor, specifically the Core Ultra 7 155H SKU. This processor features 16 cores and 22 threads, surpassing the capabilities of the Ryzen Z1 Extreme found on the ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go.

The Core Ultra 7 155H offers 6 P-Cores, 8 E-Cores, and 2 LP-Cores. The built-in GPU, based on Arc Alchemist architecture with 8 Xe-Cores, is set to reach speeds of up to 2.25 GHz. The console will operate on 64-bit Windows 11 and will come with 32GB RAM. That being said, MSI may provide various configurations to accommodate different user needs.

While the official unveiling of the upcoming handheld is set for CES 2024 next week, the teaser has already provided an advanced glimpse of the designs. The console incorporates Xbox-style controls, complete with RGB backlights and front-facing speakers. Notably, the display features sizable bezels at the top and bottom, with slightly narrower ones on the sides. CES 2024 is scheduled to kick off on January 8, so we won’t have to wait long for more details on the console.
