Now, the Nokia 2.4 is receiving a new update.

As per the latest reports, the Nokia 2.4 budget smartphone, one of the brand’s cheapest devices, has started getting the Android 12 update.

While HMD Global has not officially announced the rollout of this update, reports are confirming that the update is indeed being released. It is currently available for smartphones in France and Pakistan.

The update is about 1.75GB in size and comes with the April 2022 security patch, which is good given that it’s currently mid-May when the update is being released. Although it’s limited to a few regions right now, we expect it to be available to other regions soon.

The Nokia 2.4 features a 6.5-inch HD+ display with a waterdrop notch that houses a 5-megapixel selfie camera. It is powered by the Helio P22 processor and is available in 2GB RAM and 3GB RAM variants with 32GB and 64GB of expandable storage respectively.

There are two cameras on the back of the phone – a 13MP main camera and a 2MP depth camera. It also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, FM radio, and a 4500mAh battery that charges via a microUSB port.

While a successor should not come until much later, recent announcements have shown that there is no clear cut pattern to HMD Global’s release schedule. This explains why a new device spotted on the Bluetooth SIG database is believed to be a successor to the Noia 2.4.

The device was first spotted on the Bluetooth SIG website by NokiaPowerUser with the model number T99652AA1 which is similar to the Nokia 2.4’s T99651AA1 model number. While there is no specific mention that this is the Nokia 2.4’s successor, the similarity in their model numbers points to the two devices being related.

The Bluetooth certificate shows the device has support for Bluetooth 5.0 and support for LTE. Since this doesn’t have 5G support, it is most definitely a budget device.

The Nokia 2.4 launched with a 6.5-inch display with a waterdrop notch and a 1600 x 720 resolution. It has a MediaTek Helio P22 processor inside that comes with 2GB or 3GB of RAM. Depending on the RAM variant, you get 32GB or 64GB of storage. There is a dedicated MicroSD card slot so that you can add more storage without sacrificing the SIM slot.

A 13MP + 2MP dual camera combo sits on the back of the phone while a 5MP camera is in front for selfies. The Nokia 2.4 also has a fingerprint scanner on the back, a 4500mAh battery, and runs Android 10. It is one of the Nokia devices scheduled to get updated to Android 11 this quarter. The tweet clearly suggests the brand’s latest budget smartphones will be officially announced in the country on November 26.

Also, this goes in line with the report from last week. However, the report only mentioned the arrival of Nokia 2.4 to India and not Nokia 3.4. So that means that the former should go on sale soon after the announcement, whereas the latter could be made available later.

Having said that, it is weird for HMD Global to launch smartphones targeted at India’s hottest price segment after the Diwali festive season, the period in which the most sales occur. All the major brands had already released their devices a month earlier to capture the market.

If HMD Global really wants to break into the Indian phone market, they should first work on their launch cycle and supply chain. Even after nearly one month from the announcement of Nokia 215 4G and Nokia 225 4G, the latter is only available in Black color and the former is yet to go on sale.

Design

Despite it is not the most expensive and advanced device of this comparison, the Nokia 3.4 is definitely the most attractive one when it comes to the design. Indeed, it is the only one with a punch-hole display instead of a waterdrop notch. Its rear side is very similar to the Nokia 5.3, with a circular camera module and a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. Nokia 2.4 is different from its more expensive siblings, but it is still a beautiful device compared to other entry-level phones. With these handsets, you do not get premium materials: they all come with polycarbonate bodies, but the display of the Nokia 5.3 is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

Display

Nokia 2.4, Nokia 3.4, and Nokia 5.3 are equipped with below-average, displays, but they can still be considered sufficient panels. They come with HD+ resolution, so not a very high level of detail. With the Nokia 3.4, you get a higher pixel density, but at the same time, you get a smaller display. The best panel belongs to the Nokia 5.3 which provides a higher brightness. It even comes with a wider panel than its siblings. In each case, you get an IPS panel which is not disappointing.

Specs & Software

The best components belong to the Nokia 5.3 which has a lower-midrange hardware department. It includes a Snapdragon 665 chipset paired with up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 64 GB of eMMC 5.1 internal storage which you can furtherly expand with a micro SD slot. Right after, we got the Nokia 3.4 with a still pretty nice Snapdragon 460 chipset which behaves pretty well in every scenario (but do not expect a lot if you are not a basic user). Unless you are a basic user, you should not go for the Nokia 2.4 as its Helio P22 is not a very powerful chipset. Nokia 2.4, 3.4, and 5.3 are all devices that will get 2 years of software support, despite they are budget phones. This is actually the strongest point of Nokia.

Camera

Nokia 5.3 wins the camera comparison, but it is not so different from the Nokia 3.4. It only adds an additional 2 MP macro camera on the rear side, but for the rest, it has the same camera setup including a 13 MP main sensor, a 5 MP ultrawide lens, and a 2 MP depth sensor. Even the front camera is identical: a sufficient 8 MP snapper. Nokia 2.4 is totally different with its 8 MP main sensor paired with a 2 MP depth sensor, as well as an inferior 5 MP front camera.

Battery

Nokia 2.4 is inferior to the Nokia 3.4 and 5.3 under all the aspects except battery life. With its bigger 4500 mAh battery, it is able to last more on a single charge. With Nokia 3.4 and 5.3 you will get more or less the same battery life (4000 mAh battery), but the Nokia 3.4 should last a bit more due to its smaller display.

Price

Nokia 2.4 is priced €120/$140 in its base variant, for the Nokia 3.4 you need €160/$185, and Nokia 5.3 costs €219/$255. The Nokia 5.3 is the winner of the comparison, but if you want to save some money, you won’t face a lot of compromises with the Nokia 3.4. It has lower performance than the Nokia 5.3, but it is still fast and reliable, and the rest of the specs sheet is very similar. We do not recommend the Nokia 2.4 due to its definitely weaker chipset and inferior camera department, but it has longer battery life.

Nokia 2.4

The Nokia 2.4 continues the large-screen trend adopted by the Nokia 2.3. The screen is bigger now at 6.5-inches with an HD+ resolution and a 21:9 aspect ratio. It keeps the waterdrop notch which houses a 5MP selfie camera.

The back of the phone has a 3D nano-textured design and is home to two cameras – a 13MP f/2.2 main camera and a 2MP depth sensor. Sitting below the cameras is a fingerprint scanner. HMD Global says the phone has AI imaging, night mode, and a portrait mode with support for post-capture editing.

There is an Helio P22 processor under the hood paired with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. HMD Global says the 4500mAh inside the phone should provide a 2-day battery life. Sadly, there is no fast charging and it also comes with a MicroUSB port.

Other features of the phone include NFC, a dedicated Google Assistant button, FM radio, and Android 10. HMD Global says the phone is Android 11 ready and it will get OS upgrades for two years and security patches for three years.

The Nokia 2.4 comes in three colorways – Charcoal, Dusk, and Fjord – and is priced at €119 in Europe and $139 in the US. It will be available for purchase this month.

Nokia 3.4

The Nokia 3.4 is the first in the series to have a punch-hole display. The screen is a 6.39-inch HD+ panel with an 8MP camera in the top left corner.

There is a Snapdragon 460 processor with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage that can be expanded via a MicroSD card slot. The phone has three rear cameras arranged in a cookie-shaped housing. The setup includes a 13MP primary sensor, a 5MP ultrawide angle camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. There is a fingerprint scanner under the cameras just like on the Nokia 2.4 and it also has a dedicated Google Assistant button.

The Nokia 3.4 has a 4000mAh battery capacity and should also last up to 2 days according to the manufacturer. Thankfully, it charges via a USB-C port. It also has an audio jack, an FM radio, and NFC.

The phone is priced at €159/$179 and will be available in Charcoal, Fjord, and Dusk in October.
