<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/planet-computers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Planet Computers</a> has announced that it is entering the desktop PC market segment with new ARM powered Linux computers. The new lineup is a part of its latest XR line of mini PCs, which is the first ever from the company. So lets have a look.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="730" height="483" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-7.webp?x10805" alt="Planet Computers" class="wp-image-518737" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-7.webp 730w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-7-300x198.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-7-696x461.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-7-635x420.webp 635w" sizes="(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></figure></div>

<p>As per the official <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mwc-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MWC 2023</a> announcement earlier today (27th February 2023), the London based tech startup&#8217;s latest PCs run on the Ubuntu OS. It will also be a part of its new range of Linux mini desktop PCs that are being crowdfunding on Indiegogo. CEO Janko Mrsic-Flogel stated that &#8220;The XR series is Planet’s first foray into the personal computer market. By productizing Linux into a mini desktop PC, the XR is another step towards creating a more open and inclusive computing ecosystem.”</p>

<p>The new line includes the XR1 and XR2 with former being powered by a 4 core processor, while the latter is equipped with an 8 core CPU. The XR1 features 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. On the other hand, the XR2 houses a Mali G610 GPU, 4GB to 32GB of RAM, and 32GB to 256Gb of internal storage. One can even expand this to include 2TB with add ons. Notably, the Linux mini PC also sports a colored touchscreen that offers controls and details on system performance.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="678" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14-1024x678.webp?x10805" alt="Planet Computers" class="wp-image-518738" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14-1024x678.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14-300x199.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14-768x509.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14-696x461.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14-1068x708.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14-634x420.webp 634w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/XR_PPC-14.webp 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Mrsic-Flogel further added that &#8220;Planet has always innovated with device form factors and we are especially excited about the XR’s integrated color touchscreen, which gives Linux users a new level of control and confidence, as well as the perfect platform for developers to access smart Linux appliances.” The XR lineup will be made available on Indiegogo, with the XR1 costing around £399 while the XR2 costs £499.</p>

There have been a few other options in the market, such as Windows Phone and others, but none of them were successful.</p>
<p>There was a mobile operating system called Ubuntu Touch, based on the popular <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/linux">Linux</a> distribution &#8212; Ubuntu. While Canonical, the company behind Ubunut, gave up its efforts on Ubuntu Touch, here is one of the best example of the device running it.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-368325 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Cosmo Communicator Ubuntu Touch" width="1536" height="1092" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1-768x546.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1-1024x728.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1-696x495.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1-1068x759.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-1-591x420.jpg 591w" sizes="(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px" /></p>
<p>Planet Computers is the company behind <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/11/15/cosmo-communicator-a-pda-laptop-form-factor-device-hits-350-crowdfunding-goal-at-indiegogo/">Cosmo Communicator</a> and it had promised to open up the device to more operating systems. It has been working to get Ubuntu Touch and now it seems that the outcome is finally here.</p>
<p>The device, named Cosmo Communicator, is basically a computer in the pocket which also supports calling functionality. The device is designed in such as a way that it works in landscape orientation and there&#8217;s a hardware keyboard for typing.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-368326 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Cosmo Communicator Ubuntu Touch" width="1536" height="1152" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-1068x801.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Cosmo-Communicator-Ubuntu-Touch-2-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px" /></p>
<p>The operating system, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ubuntu-touch">Ubuntu Touch</a>, was designed for smartphones but it also made flexible enough to be able to run on smartphones, tablets, and even PCs. And given that it is based on Linux, the software supports several functions.</p>
<p>A formal release of this is expected to happen later this year. The company is said to be working with the UBports community and the Linux community at large to bring support for other Linux distributions to its portable computers.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Planet Computers has a new smartphone + PC device coming up &#8212; <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/20/astro-slide-5g-first-5g-handset-full-qwerty-keypad/">Astro Slide 5G</a>, which is currently up for crowdfunding.</p>
