Samsung is expected to be the first one to launch SD865-powered smartphone, debuting next week.

Now, ahead of the launch of first smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 865 SoC, Qualcomm has shared a video sample shot in 8K resolution which was recorded using a hardware powered by the company’s flagship new chipset.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC comes with Spectra 480 ISP which the company says can process 2 gigapixels per second. Sharing the video sample, Qualcomm said: “Smartphones with the Snapdragon 865 can capture professional image quality and will pack exciting new camera features including 8K video capture. See the dramatic landscaped of Arizona in 8K video loaded with 33-megapixels! So it’s big, sharp, and shared in its full glory on YouTube.”

As for the hardware setup for shooting this 8K video, the company has revealed that it used the latest chipset paired with Sony IMX586 48MP sensor on a “prototype smartphone”.

The company has also clarified that the video was shot with pre-production hardware. Thus, the video also looks a bit noisy and grainy, which could also be due to YouTube compression or the actual hardware.

As for the upcoming smartphones, it is being reported that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphone will come with support for recording video in 8K resolution with its 108-megapixel camera sensor. Now, just months after the launch of SD855+ chipset, the company is now set to launch the next-generation SoC.

If the new reports are to be believed, then the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor is all set to launch next month. It is said that the chipset could be fabricated using TSMC’s second-generation 7nm processor.

Contradicting earlier reports of SD865 getting launched in December this year, the new report claims that the Snapdragon 865 SoC will get launched in November in order to keep up with the competition from Huawei.

Further, the report goes on adding that the smartphone manufacturers Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi will also be showcasing early prototypes of devices running Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset.

While the report claims that the next-generation flagship chipset from Qualcomm is all set to get launched next month, we are yet to come across leaks related to this upcoming processor but given the launch timeline, we should get more information soon.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus comes with the same Kryo 485 CPU cores but is now clocked at 2.96GHz, up from the 2.84GHz clock speed of the Snapdragon 855. The Adreno 640 GPU is also reported to have gained a 15% boost in speed.

As per the company’s claim, the upgrade in the GPU department makes the Snapdragon 855 Plus a great chipset for gaming. Also, it should also make it quite useful for AR and VR devices. The processor doesn’t have the new X55 modem. Even the X50 modem isn’t integrated, so manufacturers who want to use this for 5G phones will have to install the X50 modem separately.

South Korea media outfit Theelec reports that Samsung foundry for the SD865 is expected to commence at the end of 2019. The chipset will be manufactured on the 7nm ultra-violet (EUV) process with high throughput. This will be the first chipset Samsung will be manufacturing for Qualcomm using Samsung’s 7-nm EUV process. The last chip – Snapdragon 845 manufactured by Samsung foundry uses a 10nm wafer. TSMC took the lead in the 7nm process in 2018 and so, it got the orders from Qualcomm. But according to Qualcomm, the Samsung 7-nm EUV is more competitive than the TSMC 7-nm process, thus necessitating the shift to Samsung. Earlier in April, Samsung reportedly began shipping the 7-nm EUV process Exynos AP, which is expected to be used in Samsung’s upcoming flagship – the Galaxy Note 10.

Although negotiations are said to still be ongoing, both firms have reportedly entered the final stage of process negotiation. Qualcomm is expected to launch the Snapdragon 865 in 2020. Apart from Qualcomm, other OEMs expected to use Samsung’s 7nm EUV include NVIDIA, IBM and several others apart from Apple and Huawei. The next-gen chipset is also expected to come in two versions, a standard version and another equipped with Snapdragon X55 5G chipset.

Recently, the company released two new upper mid-range chipsets — Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 and Snapdragon 730/G.

Now, the company has reportedly started working on its next-generation flagship chipset, which is expected to be named Snapdragon 865. The SD855 had an internal model number SM8150 and was codenamed “Hana” and if the reports are to be believed, then its successor has the model number SM8250.

The codename of the upcoming flagship chipset is said to be “Project Kona”. Kona is a name referring to the Hawaiian Islands. Interestingly, Qualcomm has been hosting a Qualcomm Tech Summit in Hawaii to present its high-end processors in December.

While nothing much is known about the Snapdragon 865 processor, it is said that the chipset will come with support for LPDDR5 RAM. The high-end chip for Windows devices Snapdragon 8cx is still using LPDDR4X. Qualcomm already has samples of the new SM8250 internally and is testing them in conjunction with the LPDDR5 memory, leaving it open who the supplier is.

However, it’s a long time before we see anything substantially related to the upcoming Snapdragon 865 flagship chipset from Qualcomm. So, we expect to know more about this SoC in the coming months.

Meanwhile, TSMC has announced its new 5nm process infrastructure, readying base for the Apple A14 chipset, which will be powering the Apple iPhones launching in 2020. Thus, we are also expecting a Qualcomm chipset manufactured using a 5nm process.
