Nubia Red Magic 5G makes its way to the US for a starting price of $579. It is up for purchase on the brand’s official website with shipping commencing from June 22. It is currently the cheapest 2020 5G flagship smartphone in North America.

The Nubia Red Magic 5G is a gaming smartphone with 6.65-inch 144Hz AMOLED display. The handset is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC paired with up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.0 storage.

As the name suggests, the phone also supports 5G connectivity just like any other flagship smartphone released this year. Being a gaming phone, it features a striking design along with RGB light. It comes in three colorways namely Eclipse Black, Hot Rod Red, and Pulse.

Additional features of the phone include liquid cooling with an internal fan, shoulder buttons, and WiFi 6. As for optics, it sports a triple camera setup consisting of a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide shooter, and a 2MP macro snapper. Whereas, the selfie camera is of 8 megapixels.

Last but not least, the handset runs Android 10 and gets its power from a 4,500 mAh battery with support for 55W fast charging.

Nubia has announced a limited Red Magic 5G Transparent Edition for the Chinese market. The highlight of this variant is its transparent rear glass panel and 16GB RAM. The handset is priced at 5,199 yuan ($735) and will be available to purchase on June 14.

The new Nubia Red Magic 5G Transparent Edition features the same specifications as other variants of the device. But it comes with a distinct design and a whopping 16GB LPDDR5 as the high-end regular variant.

As the name suggests, the back of the phone features a transparent rear glass panel which showcases the fake internals just like the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mi 9 Explorer Editions. 

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC seen inside the phone is a plastic prop but the layout is accurate. To see the actual internals, you might want to have a look at Zach Nelson’s (JerryRigEverything) teardown video on YouTube.

Having said that, though the rear is fake, it does look cool, especially the physical fan and the patterns. 

Unfortunately, if you are interested in buying the Red Magic 5G Transparent Edition, it is not possible since this version of the handset is currently limited to China. The brand is yet to reveal if it will be ever made available outside its home country.

Anyway, you can still grab the new Hot Rod Red Edition of the phone, which has an Iron Man vibe to it.

The brand has also announced to donate 1% of the pre-order earnings to Child’s Play, a USA based charity organization that gives away toys and games to children’s hospitals. The Nubia Red Magic 5G launched globally in two variants – Eclipse Black 8GB + 128GB and Pulse 12GB + 256GB. Now, the brand has announced a third option called Hot Rod Red 8GB + 128GB.

As the name suggests the new version of the handset features a red paint job. But the centre spin of the phone is black just like the other two variants with two golden-yellow triangles with ‘Powered by Nubia’ and ‘5G’ brandings.

Apart from the new color, the new version of Red Magic 5G features the same specifications as the initially launched variants. So it rocks the same 144Hz AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, 5G connectivity, cooling fan, and more.

Earlier this year, Nubia had launched its 2020 5G flagship, the Red Magic 5G. The handset is already available in many countries across the globe in different color options. Now, a fourth and special variant is also making its way to the market, which is the Transparent Edition.

The Red Magic 5G Transparent Edition is now available for pre-orders in China. It will go for a price of 4,599 Yuan (roughly 647 US Dollars). This is for the 12GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage variant. Despite its name having the word transparent, the smartphone’s rear panel isn’t actually see through. Rather, the back panel actually has a special sticker on the inside of the protective glass, which showcases where key internal components are housed.

Back in March 2020, Nubia launched the Red Magic 5G, which is the current flagship handset from the company. It is a gaming smartphone that featured Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 SoC alongside 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and other features like a 144Hz refresh rate display. Despite being packed to the brim with top notch specs and features the device did not have an option to switch between screen refresh rate modes amongst other trivial customizable options. However, it turns out that the device does have these functions, but they are hidden.

Talking about the lacking features first, these include a 120Hz refresh rate mode, an advanced screen color option, and an HD screen recording feature. These aren’t exactly profound and game-breaking features but are generally appreciated in a smartphone with a certain degree of customizability. But according to a recent post on the Red Magic 5G forums, it seems that the device does, in fact, include all of these additional settings and can even be easily accessed through an app like Activity Launcher.

If you are searching for a flagship phone to buy, there are several options available from Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, iQOO, and Nubia (RedMagic). However, choosing a phone can be difficult when there are plenty of options available.

Today, we are taking two of this year’s flagships and pitting them against each other to make it easier for you to choose. The phones are the new OnePlus 8 and the Red Magic 5G which recently went on sale globally.

As usual, we will compare both phones based on the following:

Design

The OnePlus 8 adopts the popular punch-hole display design. Its screen is also curved at the sides which can be a pro or a con depending on the user. On the other hand, the Red Magic 5G sticks to a regular display and keeps the panel flat.

Both phones are covered in glass on both sides and come in pretty and bright colors, though the Red Magic’s Hot Rod Red and Pulse colorways will surely turn heads faster than the OnePlus 8. Folks may lean towards the OnePlus because it has a more simple design, unlike the Red Magic Phone which doesn’t hide in its design that it is a gaming phone.

Another aspect of the design worth mentioning is the weight and the dimensions. The OnePlus 8 is about 40 grams lighter than the Red Magic 5G though one can say its smaller battery capacity and display plays a part in keeping it light. It is also slimmer at 8mm against the Red Magic’s 9.8mm thick body.

Display

The OnePlus has a 6.55-inch 1080 x 2400 AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. The Red Magic 5G has a larger 6.65-inch 1080 x 2340 AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate.

The OnePlus has a higher PPI and also has HDR10+ support but the Red Magic’s 144Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate are higher which means games and apps that can take advantage of the high refresh rate will run smoother compared to the OnePlus 8.

While a higher refresh rate is a plus, the OnePlus 8 has a better display with respect to color accuracy. DisplayMate even rates it has one of the best displays in the industry.

Performance

The two phones are powered by the same Snapdragon 865 chipset and come in different RAM and storage configurations. Performance should be the same but it is possible one is smoother than the other based on software optimizations.

Cameras

The OnePlus 8 has a 48MP f/1.7 primary camera with PDAF and OIS along with a 16MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera.

The Red Magic 5G has a 64MP f/1.8 Sony IMX 686 primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide angle camera, and a 2MP macro camera. There is no OIS which means photos and videos will not come out well if you don’t have stable hands.

Reviews have revealed the Red Magic takes average photos. The OnePlus 8 is also not a camera beast and is said to be decent at best. However, the presence of OIS is a plus. It should also take better ultrawide angle photos and selfies than the Red Magic 5G.

Battery and Fast Charging

The OnePlus 8 has a 4300mAh battery capacity and supports 30W wired fast charging. The Red Magic 5G comes with not only a bigger 4500mAh battery but also charges faster as it supports 55W wired fast charging. Nubia claims the phone will charge from empty to full in 40 minutes. Sadly, you have to purchase a 55W charger separately for the Red Magic 5G as it ships with an 18W fast charger. OnePlus ships its own phone with a 30W charger.

Additional Features

The Red Magic 5G has a number of additional features that give it an edge over the OnePlus 8. It has an audio jack, a built-in cooling fan, shoulder trigger buttons, 7.1 channel surround sound, 4D shock, and customizable LEDs.

It also supports additional accessories such as the Magic Adapter which has an ethernet port, a USB Type-C port, and an audio jack. With the adapter, you can charge, plug in your headphones, and connect a LAN cable without any of the cords getting in the way while you play games on the phone. Just remember that the Magic Adapter has to be purchased separately.

The OnePlus 8 doesn’t have any fancy tricks as it is a regular flagship and not a gaming phone. However, it will handle any game you throw at it. It doesn’t have an audio jack but it has stereo speakers like the Red Magic 5G. It will also survive splashes and usage in the rain even though it doesn’t have an official IP rating.

One important feature that is worth mentioning is software support that matches that of Google’s Pixel phones. The OnePlus 8 and the Red Magic 5G both run Android 10 out of the box but the OnePlus 8 will most likely get updated to Android 11 first. It will also get updated to Android 12 and Android 13, a feat the Red Magic 5G can only dream of.

Price

The Red Magic 5G is currently available for $579/£539/€579 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB version and $649/£599/€649 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB version.

The OnePlus sells for a much higher price in the US, UK, and Europe. It is priced at $699/£599/€719 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB model and $799/£699/€819 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB version.

The Red Magic 5G is not sold in India but the OnePlus 8 is. It starts at INR 41,999 (~$549) for the 6GB + 128GB version; goes up to INR 44,999 (~$588) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB version, and then INR 49,999 (~$653) for the 12GB + 256GB version.

If the Red Magic 5G does make its way to India, we do not think it will sell for lower than the OnePlus 8 as it will be imported into the country, which means import tax and the recent increase in GST for mobile phones will drive the price up.

Conclusion

The Red Magic 5G is quite affordable compared to several other flagships and that is on top of the several additional features it has to offer. Sadly, reviews have revealed it performs averagely when it comes to taking pictures.

Nubia’s poor software support is another thing. The Red Magic 3 and Red Magic 3S released last year are still running Android Pie which means the Red Magic 5G may not get updated at all or will receive just one OS upgrade that will arrive pretty late.

The OnePlus 8 sells for more but it tries to justify its price with its higher quality display, better cameras, and OnePlus’ software support. It would be an easy recommendation if it sold for slightly less in Europe and the US. Nevertheless, it is one of the top flagship phones you can purchase now.

Red Magic 5G Design

Gaming smartphones have never been designed to look simple and the Red Magic 5G sticks to that tradition. There are lots of lines as well as colors. Red Magic 5G Specifications

The Red Magic 5G is the first phone in the world with a 144Hz refresh rate. It is an AMOLED panel that measures 6.65-inches and has a resolution of 2340 x 1080. There is no notch or punch hole in the screen. However, there is a pretty slim bezel at the top and bottom of the screen. Nubia has also gone with an in-display fingerprint scanner this time around. The display also has a TUV Rheinland certification for blue-light protection.

The Snapdragon 865 processor and its Adreno 650 GPU takes works with the high-refresh-rate display and 340Hz touch sampling rate to provide the best gaming experience on a mobile phone. Nubia says the high refresh rate experience is not limited to just gaming phones but also tens of other apps including browsers, chat apps, and social media apps. The phone comes with up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB UFS 3.0 storage.

The Red Magic 5G has three rear cameras. The primary sensor is a 64MP Sony IMX686 camera and the other two sensors are an 8MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP macro camera. In front is an 8MP camera for selfies.

This a gaming phone after all, so it is no surprise that the phone has two touch control shoulder buttons. Nubia says these buttons have a 300Hz pressure sensitivity.

Nubia has added a set of 7 contact pins on the left side of the phone. These pins are for a dock which when connected allows you to charge, connect earphones and also connect a network cable all at the same time.

The phone has dual cooling technology that is termed ICE 3.0 and it is a combination of air cooling and liquid cooling. There is a cooling fan with a maximum speed of 15000 RPM that can reduce the CPU’s temperature by up to 18°C (along with liquid cooling). Nubia says the air duct area for the cooling fan has been increased by up to 56% compared to that of the previous generation. There is also a liquid cooling system with an L-shaped cooling pipe, thermal gel, multi-layer graphite, and a high-conductivity copper foil.

On March 12, Nubia will be unveiling the Nubia Red Magic 5G smartphone. The launch event will be held at 7 PM (local time) in China. Today, the company shared a poster of the smartphone on Weibo to reveal its front and rear design.

As it can be seen, the Red Magic 5G phone will be arriving in at least two color options in the Chinese market. The first one has a red-blue colored rear whereas the other one is a black model with red accents. The phone could be also coming in other color options.

As far as the front of the phone is concerned, the Red Magic 5G phone can be seen flaunting a notch-less display. The side bezels of the phone are quite thin while the upper and lower ones are symmetrical.

The Nubia Red Magic 5G phone was recently spotted on TENAA. The listing of the phone only revealed its images and a few specs. The entire specifications of the phone are yet to appear on the certification platform. The device measures 168.56 x 78 x 9.75mm and it houses a 6.65-inch display and a 4,400mAh minimum rated battery. The phone will arrive with support for 55W fast charging technology.

The Nubia Red Magic 5G phone has a X-shaped pattern on its metallic back panel. One half of the device is red color while the other half is in blue. While the red edge of the device isn’t visible in the image, the blue edge can be seen sporting a shoulder button, an air vent and a pogo connector. The Red Magic 5G was scheduled to launch at MWC 2020 but the event had to be postponed due to the GSMA’s decision to cancel MWC this year. Nubia is yet to announce a new launch date for the gaming phone. While we wait for that, TENAA has provided images of the device and they are unlike anything we have ever seen.

The Red Magic 5G was first seen on TENAA last week and the listing revealed a few details such as the model number which is N659J, the display which measures 6.65-inches, and the battery capacity that is revealed to be 4400mAh.

The photos show the Red Magic 5G coated in a mix of pink/red and blue. Each color covers one half of the device including the frame. Running through the middle, from the top where the triple rear cameras are down to the Red Magic logo is a strip of black paint.

The images show the left side of the frame is coated blue with a red button at the top while the right side of the frame is painted red. The trigger buttons on the right are black. There are also black antenna lines around the phone.

We want to believe this is a limited edition model since there is “05” written on the right side of the phone.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G launched as the first phone with 16GB RAM. We thought the Mi 10 Pro 5G will also have a 16GB RAM version but it maxes out at 12GB. Today, Ni Fei, President of Nubia Technology Co. Ltd., revealed that the Red Magic 5G will have 16GB of RAM.

In the Weibo post, the company’s top executive said he carried out a poll to find out if 16GB of RAM is necessary on a device. The result of the poll showed people do want 16GB RAM phones. Based on the result, Nubia has decided there will be a 16GB RAM version of their upcoming Red Magic 5G gaming phone.

The Weibo post even includes a screenshot of the device’s About Phone section and it confirms there is a 16GB RAM version and also reveals some other details. It was previously revealed that the phone will have LPDDR5 RAM supplied by Samsung.

The image reveals the upcoming phone has model number NX659J. It runs Redmagic OS version 3.0 based on Android 10 and with January 2020’s security patch.

This version has 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Previous Red Magic phones don’t have storage expansion slots, so don’t expect this to have. However, 512GB of storage would have been better. The image also confirms the Red Magic 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 865 processor and has a Snapdragon X55 5G modem.

Other confirmed features include a 144Hz refresh rate, triple rear cameras, WiFi 6, 240Hz touch sampling rate, and a built-in cooling fan.

Following the GSMA’s decision to cancel MWC 2020, other manufacturers that hadn’t pulled out of the event prior to the announcement have been left with no other option than to cancel their launch events too. The latest to do so is Nubia and it has put out a statement that its Red Magic 5G launch will no longer hold.

The Red Magic was supposed to launch first at MWC 2020 but that will no longer be the case. The official statement said they had planned to have the global launch of Red Magic 5G at MWC but since the GSMA has canceled the event due to safety concerns about the Coronavirus, they have been left with no choice other than to cancel the event and pack up their booth.

The flagship gaming smartphone will still get a global launch but it may be announced first in China. The phone will have a 144Hz refresh rate, 5G support, and a combination of air cooling and liquid cooling. It will also have LPDDR5 RAM, triple rear cameras, and super fast charging.

Nubia says it will announce a new date for the launch of the phone and its other products as soon as possible.

Nubia is all set to announce its new gaming flagship phone at MWC 2020 called the Red Magic 5G. Aside from confirming the Red Magic 5G’s impending launch at MWC 2020, the Chinese smartphone maker has also hinted at numerous unique features including support for 80W fast charging and 144Hz display.

The company’s President and co-founder, Mr. Ni Fei took to his personal Weibo account to share some posters. Mr. Ni Fei also touted the Red Magic 5G as the “world’s first 144Hz 5G gaming phone” in his post. Given that there is currently no other phone slated to offer a refresh rate of 144Hz, it looks like this claim is true.

It can be recalled that Nubia had already confirmed that its new phone will pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, which is capable of supporting a refresh rate of 144Hz at QHD+ resolution. Moreover, it is hardly surprising that the new phone supports 5G connectivity since Snapdragon X55 is the only modem compatible with the Snapdragon 865. There is a possibility that the phone comes with sub-6GHz 5G network support, though.

According to Mr. Ni Fei, the new Nubia-branded gaming phone will ship with LPDDR5 RAM, which works with Snapdragon 865’s memory controller. One of his recent revelations also suggests that the device will come with 80W wired fast charging support.

The USB-IF told AndroidPolice that the aforesaid charging rate (9.6A/8.4V) mentioned by Nubia is unsuitable for the USB Power Delivery specification, which means, Nubia has come up with its own charging solution. While such super-fast charging technology is known for gradually reducing the battery’s capacity, Mr. Ni Fei says the company solved the problem with the help of Red Magic 5G’s built-in fan that restricts the battery from overheating while it’s charging.

This not only ensures an improved battery life but also enables the battery to fast-charge for a longer duration and minimizes the charging time. There’s a chance Nubia could change its plan to attend the MWC 2020 citing the 2019-nCoV outbreak; however, more details about the Red Magic 5G are likely to surface online ahead of its scheduled launch.

Nubia’s Red Magic line of gaming smartphone is preparing to announce a new phone. The device, which is currently referred to as the Red Magic 5G, first appeared in the news in early December. In the following weeks, details about some of its features such as its display, cameras, and charging technology were posted on the web. Today, more details have surfaced.

A tweet posted by Digital Chat Station today has disclosed some of the Red Magic 5G’s key specifications. Some of them we already know while others are new.

According to the leaker, the phone will have a 6.65-inch OLED display with a 2340 x 1080 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate was originally confirmed by Nubia’s own president back in mid-January. Most phones with a high refresh rate either have a 90Hz or 120Hz screen, so this will be a first for the mobile industry. However, there is a chance more manufacturers will jump on this train. Redmi has even released a video showing the Redmi K30 5G’s display can be tweaked to support a 144Hz refresh rate but the Red Magic 5G will likely be the first phone to launch with the feature right out of the box.

An image shared by Ni Fei, the CEO of Nubia, revealed the upcoming Red Magic 5G has triple rear cameras. Thanks to today’s leak, we now know the primary sensor is a 64MP sensor. Although unconfirmed, the sensor may be the Sony IMX686. Sadly, there is no info with respect to the other rear cameras and the front-facing camera.

With respect to the processor, it is no news that there will be a Snapdragon 865 chipset under the hood but now we know it will be paired with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

The battery capacity is also still unknown but it is stated that the Red Magic 5G will have support for 55W Super Charge. That should help users recharge their device really fast irrespective of the battery capacity.

The official Red Magic Weibo account announced today that its upcoming smartphone (Red Magic 5G) will be the first dual-mode 5G gaming smartphone powered by the new Snapdragon 865.

Other details about the upcoming phone are still unknown at the moment. The Red Magic 3 launched in May and if the manufacturer is sticking to the same timeline, there are still 5 months left before the new phone launches.

Some of the features we expect to see include a bigger battery capacity but probably not a significant increase since its predecessor already packs a large 5000mAh battery.
