Asus finally begins rolling out the Android 16 update, and it’s none other than the Zenfone 12 Ultra and ROG Phone 9 getting the first bites. Both devices were also part of the beta program, which began in August, and after three months, they are now receiving the stable version.

The Android 16 update for the Zenfone 12 Ultra and ROG Phone 9 comes with the firmware version 36.0810.1810.43. Since it’s a major upgrade, the download size should be over a gigabyte; hence, it’s recommended to switch to a Wi-Fi connection to download such large update packages.

If you’re rocking a Zenone 12 Ultra or ROG Phone 9, go to Settings > System and tap System updates to check if the update is available. As the rollout usually happens in batches, the update may take a few days to reach all users.

The Android 16 upgrade for Zenfone 12 Ultra and ROG Phone 9 doesn’t bring groundbreaking features or major UI changes, but it brings notable improvements and minor additions to further improve the software experience, including a new way to trigger predictive back gesture, a new skip countdown button to the screen recording feature, and the ability to trigger digital assistant by long-pressing the power button.

The update also fixes the occasional no sound issue during calls with Bluetooth headsets. For ROG phones, Android 16 includes updated game profiles, updated AirTrigger profiles, and updated Macro profiles in ROG Instant Master for many popular games.

Here’s the complete Android 16 changelog:

Adjusted the system navigation settings. The Predictive Back animation can be triggered by either the back gesture or long-pressing the back button.

Added a power button option in the advanced setting, allowing users to configure quick access to the digital assistant by long-pressing the power button.

Added the skip countdown button to the screen recording feature.

In About Phone > Status setting, users can long-press the IMEI or Serial number field to copy the content.

Fix the issue of occasional no sound during calls with Bluetooth headsets.

Some 3rd-party apps are not compatible with Android 16 yet.

Updated game profiles for the following games: Arena of Valor (TW), Arena of Valor (US), Garena Delta Force (TW) (Cooler X Pro), Delta Force (WW) (Cooler X Pro), Genshin Impact (WW), Free Fire (WW), KartRider Rush+ (WW), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (WW).

Updated AirTrigger profiles in ROG Instant Master for the following games: NEW STATE: NEW ERA OF BR (WW), Brawl Stars (WW), Genshin Impact (WW), Black Desert Mobile (WW), GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE (TW) (Cooler X Pro), GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE (WW) (Cooler X Pro), Racing Master (SEA)(Cooler X Pro), Need for Speed Mobile (TW).

Updated Macro profiles in ROG Instant Master for the following games: Arena of Valor (TW), Arena of Valor (US), Zenless Zone Zero (WW), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (WW), Genshin Impact (WW), Honor of Kings (WW), League of Legends: Wild Rift (TW), League of Legends: Wild Rift (US).

The gaming-related changes (last three bullet points) do not apply to the Zenfone 12 Ultra.

Both Asus phones were launched with Android 15 out of the box, and therefore, it’s the first major Android upgrade for them. Sadly, they will receive just one more OS upgrade before reaching the end of major upgrades. However, they will continue to receive security updates for a few more years.

Owners of the two models can now enroll directly from their device. The process is simple: head to Settings > System > System update, tap the gear icon, and select Enroll in Android preview program. Once accepted, the phone pulls in the beta build over the air.

But there’s an important caveat — beta software is likely to include bugs, and once you jump in, there’s no easy way to go back to Android 15. That means testers are effectively locked in until the stable Android 16 release, which Asus is targeting for early 2026.

Despite the flagship specs, Asus is only promising two Android upgrades: Android 16 and Android 17. The cheaper ROG Phone 9 FE, which launched earlier this year, isn’t included in the beta program but will follow the same update cycle. Compared to Samsung and Google’s seven-year update commitment, Asus’ two-year window feels limited — especially for flagships priced at nearly €1,000.

Should you try it?

The beta gives users an early look at Android 16’s tweaks, including better gaming optimizations and battery efficiency improvements. Still, the lack of a rollback option makes this a risky choice for anyone relying on their phone as a daily driver. For those who don’t mind the bugs, it’s a chance to be among the first to see what Android 16 brings to Asus’ gaming lineup.

Red Magic and ROG (Republic of Gamers) are two well known brands that make gaming smartphones. ASUS with its ROG Phone series and Nubia’s Red Magic numbered series of gaming phones feature cutting edge hardware for the best gaming experience. But what makes them distinct from one another? Is one better than the other? Read on to find out.

Red Magic or ROG: About the Brands

ASUS is a renowned brand that is known for its PCs, laptops, and recently, even handheld gaming consoles. The popular ROG and TUF series are under its umbrella, with the former including smartphones as well. To recall, ASUS is a Taiwanese based company that is veteran in the gaming and PC industry. Back in 2018, ASUS entered the gaming smartphone segment with the ROG Phone lineup, which has continued till this day.

Red Magic 10

On the other hand, Red Magic is a sub-brand of Chinese smartphone maker Nubia. Since its inception, Nubia launched powerful gaming smartphones under the Red Magic numbered series, which also made its debut in 2018. Right now, the Red Magic 10 series continues this legacy with next-gen specs and features.

Latest Gaming Phones: Red Magic 10 & ASUS ROG Phone 9

As of right now, both brands have officially launched their latest generation of flagship gaming phones. ASUS unveiled the ROG Phone 9 series back in November, while the Red Magic 10 series was first announced a week ahead of the ROG Phone 9 in China.

ROG Phone 9 series

Since gaming is the biggest aspect of these devices, ASUS and Nubia pack top notch hardware on the ROG Phone 9 and Red Magic 10 lineup. The two series are powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is Qualcomm’s flagship chipset. This processor brings impressive performance upgrades over its predecessor along with GPU upgrades and power efficiency improvements.

So you’re getting top notch gaming experience. Keeping with the gaming focus, you’re also getting shoulder triggers that make the controls similar to consoles. The ROG Phone 9 series and Red Magic 10 lineup also bring cutting edge cooling mechanisms, massive batteries, and much more.

Availability & Verdict

Red Magic is a known brand in China but it’s not as established in the global market as ASUS. The ROG branding is synonyms with high-end gaming in markets like the US. The recent ROG Phone 9 series made its debut in that region for a starting price tag of 999 US Dollars.

While the Red Magic 10 series recently made its global debut in the US, its availability is more limited. Although it is a lot more affordable with a 649 US Dollar starting price. You’re also getting a larger 6,500mAh battery pack that supports a faster 80W wired fast charging and a dedicated fan for improved cooling. Neither of these devices excels in other aspects like photography that regular smartphones are usually tested for. So you can choose between these two brands based on your region and budget.

While these offer similar specs and performance, there are a number of differences between the two versions. So here’s everything different between the two ROG Phones.

ASUS ROG Phone 9 and ROG Phone 9 Pro

ASUS ROG Phone 9 vs ROG Phone 9 Pro: The Mini LEDs

When you place the two ROG Phones 9 phones against one another, you can immediately tell the difference in design. The ROG Phone 9 has a familiar design with the ROG brand logo at the back. However, the ROG Phone 9 Pro has a special spark. On the rear panel, it houses 648 programmable mini LEDs. This allows users to not only customize their smartphone’s aesthetic with unique animations. This can even interact with games for a more unique experience. ASUS has basically doubled the number of LEDs, even introducing retro games on the AniMe Vision display.

More Storage, More RAM

The company unveiled the ROG Phone 9 series with Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon 8 Elite SoCm, which promises 45% faster CPU performance, 40% improved GPU capabilities, and a significantly enhanced NPU for AI-driven tasks. This chipset is paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage on the ROG Phone 9.

Meanwhile, the ROG Phone 9 Pro is released with up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. The storage configuration is definitely overkill, but it ensures future proofing for next gen mobile games, multitasking, and heavy applications.

The Telephoto Camera

ASUS features capable images sensors on the ROG Phone 9 series, despite these models being gaming smartphones. The ROG Phone 9 and ROG Phone 9 Pro features a 50MP primary camera (Sony LYTIA 700 sensor) along with a 13MP ultra wide angle lens. But while the vanilla version has 5MP marco shooter, the more expensive ROG Phone 9 Pro has a 32MP telephoto shooter with 3x optical zoom. For selfies and video calls, the flagship gaming phone lineup houses a 32MP sensor.

Pricing

Another major difference between the ROG Phones is the pricing. The ASUS ROG Phone 9 starts from 999.99 US Dollars and is available in two color options, namely Storm White and Phantom Black. On the other hand, the ROG Phone 9 Pro costs slightly higher, with a starting price tag of 1,199.99 US Dollars. However, this device is only available in a lone Phantom Black.

The ROG Phone 9 series boasts a 6.78-inch Full HD+ AMOLED HDR display with a variable refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120 Hz, peaking at 185 Hz via Game Genie for select games. This makes it one of the most versatile and high-refresh-rate displays on the market, suitable for both high-intensity gaming and daily tasks. The display also comes with a peak brightness of 2500 nits and coverage of 107.37% DCI-P3 color space ensuring vivid, true-to-life colors under any lighting condition.

This not only allows users to customize their phone’s aesthetic with unique animations but also interacts with gaming environments for an immersive experience. This year, Asus has enhanced this feature by doubling the number of LEDs and introducing retro games playable directly on the AniMe Vision display, blending nostalgia with modern technology.

With the announcement of the latest flagship chips, phones utilizing them started debuting a few weeks back. More such devices are expected to launch in the coming weeks.

Three brands have confirmed the announcement of new smartphones next week. There will be four launches and two of them will be from the same brand for different markets.

Firstly, Asus will take wraps off its next-gen gaming smartphone. Whereas Xiaomi will unveil its most affordable 5G smartphone to date in India.

Finally, Vivo will bring its recently released X200 series to Malaysia and a budget model to India.

Let’s take a look at these products one by one.

Upcoming Smartphones Next Week

ROG Phone 9

The ASUS ROG Phone 9 is scheduled to launch on November 19 (Tuesday). Like the previous generation, two devices are expected, namely ROG Phone 9 and ROG Phone 9 Pro.

Both handsets will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. Similar to their predecessors, they will have a minimal design for gaming smartphones.

The vanilla model is tipped to arrive with a 6.78-inch FHD+ 165Hz OLED display, a 50MP (wide) + 13MP (ultrawide) + 5MP (macro) triple camera setup, a 32MP selfie camera, a 5,800mAh battery, and 65W charging support.

Vivo X200 Series

The Vivo X200 series is going global starting November 19 (Tuesday). Malaysia will be the first market to receive it.

The lineup will include two devices, such as Vivo X200 and Vivo X200 Pro. The smaller Vivo X200 Pro Mini will not be making its way outside mainland China.

The phones come with a MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chip, Zeiss optics, a 120Hz LTPO OLED display, an IP69 rating (dust and water resistance), and 90W charging support. Both feature a 50MP primary camera, a 50MP ultrawide unit with autofocus, and a 32MP selfie camera.

However, the pro has a 200MP 3.7x periscope camera as opposed to a 50MP 3x unit on the standard model. Additionally, the pro arrives with 30W wireless charging support, a USB 3.2 port, and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Redmi A4 5G

The Redmi A4 5G is set to go official in India on November 20 (Wednesday). It is anticipated to change the landscape of affordable 5G smartphones in the country.

The handset will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chip. It will feature a circular camera module, a glass back, and a flat frame.

The device will come with a 6.88-inch 120Hz display, a 50MP main camera, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a 5,160mAh battery. The base 4GB + 128GB variant of the product is tipped to cost ₹8,499 (including offers).

Vivo Y300

The Vivo Y300 will be officially unveiled in India on November 21 (Thursday). The handset will succeed the Y200 from earlier this year.

Ahead of its official launch next week, the anticipated ASUS ROG Phone 9 has made waves online with a leaked price listing on a Danish retailer’s website, hinting at a price increase for the new gaming device. The leak also suggests that the ROG Phone 9 will include a Pro variant, both of which were recently spotted on Geekbench, showing off benchmark performance stats that reveal powerful new hardware.

ROG Phone 9 leaked pricing

The ROG Phone 9, listed by retailer ComputerSalg in Denmark, was shown in a Storm White color with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. This version carries a price of DKK 9,838, roughly €1,320. For comparison, the ROG Phone 8 started at $1,099 or €1,099 for a configuration with 16GB RAM and 256GB storage, which is a larger memory configuration.

If ASUS has indeed increased the price while reducing RAM, it could mean a noticeable hike for the new model lineup. Based on this price information, the ROG Phone 9 Pro, when launched, is likely to carry an even higher price tag.

What to expect from the ROG 9?

The ROG Phone 9 received approval from the Wireless Power Consortium, indicating that it will support 15W wireless charging. With the ROG Phone 8 boasting a 5,500mAh battery and 65W wired charging, users can likely expect a similar or slightly upgraded battery and charging.

ASUS has confirmed that the ROG Phone 9 will closely resemble its predecessor in terms of design, with the primary difference being a redesigned ROG logo. Instead of the illuminated ROG logo seen on previous models, the new phone will feature ROG text alongside ASUS AniMe LED paneling. ASUS also mentioned “AI ON, GAME ON” regarding the device on their official website suggesting AI-driven features that could be game-changers for the gaming experience. However, specific details remain under wraps.

The device is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, a significant upgrade from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. For those unfamiliar, the new chip brings a 45% improvement in both single-core and multi-core performance and a 30% boost in GPU performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, thanks to its all-big-cores architecture. This will enable the ROG Phone 9 to handle even the most demanding mobile games with ease, given that ASUS attaches the chip with a similarly capable or upgraded cooling system.

Asus is set to release the ROG Phone 9 globally on November 19, 2024. The ROG Phone 9, already featured on Geekbench ML, showcases the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 24GB RAM. Thanks to its appearance on the Wireless Power Consortium website, more details have now surfaced. Here’s a closer look at what the Asus ROG Phone 9 has in store for gaming enthusiasts.

Certified for Wireless Power

The listing on the Wireless Power Consortium’s database, showing the code number “AI2501,” highlights that the ROG Phone 9 has passed necessary safety standards, bringing it one step closer to launch.

According to the listing, the maximum load power is “15.0”, which suggests support for 15W wireless charging. Given that its predecessor, the ROG Phone 8, featured a 5,500mAh battery with 65W wired charging, we can expect similar specifications or minor enhancements.

Specifications to expect: design, display, camera, and performance

According to previous rumors, it receives a slight design refresh: Asus has replaced the RGB ROG logo with a light-up ROG text logo, setting the ROG Phone 9 apart visually from previous models. This device has also recently received SDPPI and TKDN certifications in Indonesia, which signals an imminent release in that region as well.

The ROG Phone 9 is expected to feature a 6.78-inch Samsung LTPO AMOLED display, capable of FHD+ resolution. Known for a high refresh rate, the display can adapt from 1 Hz to 120 Hz and reach up to 185 Hz in Game Genie mode for enhanced gaming. Additionally, it could hit a peak brightness of 2,500 nits, offering excellent visibility even in bright environments.

Camera-wise, the ROG Phone 9 will likely carry a 50 MP Sony Lyt-700 main sensor, a 13 MP ultra-wide camera, and a 5 MP macro lens. For enhanced visuals, the Pro version is rumored to replace the macro lens with a 32 MP telephoto sensor. The front camera is set to feature a 32 MP sensor, suitable for high-quality selfies and video calls.

For durability, the phone’s screen is expected to come with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, ensuring higher resilience against scratches and impacts. While the waterproof certification hasn’t been confirmed, the ROG Phone 8’s IP68 rating suggests that the ROG Phone 9 may follow suit.

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, the ROG Phone 9 promises significant efficiency and performance gains over the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. With an all-big-cores design, the Snapdragon 8 Elite offers a whopping 45% higher i=single and multi-core performance, paired with 30% higher GPU performance.

Following Asus‘ official announcement of the ROG Phone 9’s launch date on November 19th, a leak from 91mobiles suggests the phone may offer a more modest upgrade compared to its predecessor.

While the phone will feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the report suggests that other key aspects remain largely the same.

Asus ROG Phone 9 Specifications

According to the leak, the ROG Phone 9 keeps the same 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate and FHD+ (2400 x 1080) resolution.

Camera specs appear similar as well, with a 32MP selfie camera and a triple rear setup featuring a 50MP main sensor, a 13MP ultrawide lens, and a 5MP macro lens, replacing the ROG Phone 8’s 32MP telephoto lens.

The leak also suggests a minor upgrade in battery capacity from 5,500mAh to 5,800mAh. Charging will be handled via a 65W adapter.

Asus ROG Phone 9 serie

However, it remains unclear if wireless charging will be included, although it’s expected since last year’s ROG Phone 8 offered this feature. The phone is still likely to include a 3.5mm headphone jack with a Hi-Fi DAC for high-fidelity audio.

Unsurprisingly, Asus will also embrace AI in the ROG Phone 9 series. The phone reportedly utilizes AI for call translation and transcription, background image generation, object recognition via the camera, and even game upscaling to higher resolutions.

Beyond the specifications, 91mobiles has shared renders showing the phone in Storm White and Phantom Black. Although a hands-on video of the design has leaked, these renders give us a much better view of the phone’s look.

K-Tai Watch Impress Japan recently shared a report confirming that the ROG Phone 9 will feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, which is expected to deliver high-performance gaming capabilities. From what we’ve seen so far from the benchmarks of other smartphones using the Snapdragon 8 Elite, we can expect the device to come with a significant leap in performance compared to its predecessor. The device is also said to reduce its power consumption by up to 30% thanks to the new chip.

A hands-on video of the device has also leaked, revealing a more premium build, and hinting at improvements in materials and design over its predecessor. The overall design language will remain similar to the ROG Phone 8. Further details about design changes and additional features are still limited. Earlier, the ROG Phone 9 Pro was spotted on the China Quality Certification Centre (CQC) listing with 65W charging, which is the same as the existing ROG Phone 8 series. While we expect improved specifications, it is also a possibility that Asus could decades to focus on just the gaming part, improving things like the Air triggers and heat management. You can check out the specifications of its predecessor below.

ASUS ROG Phone 8 specs

The ROG Phone 8 is equipped with a 6.78-inch 165Hz LTPO Samsung E6 AMOLED display and runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, paired with an Adreno 750 GPU. It offers up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage.

In terms of cameras, it features a triple rear camera system with a 50MP Sony IMX890 sensor, along with a 32MP front-facing camera for selfies. The phone is powered by a 5,500mAh battery with support for 65W fast charging. Additional gaming-oriented features include responsive AirTrigger buttons, IP68 dust and water resistance, and a high-quality 5-magnet speaker system.

ASUS has started work on its new flagship smartphone, the Zenfone 12 Ultra. Gizmochina has spotted the Zenfone 12 Ultra in the IMEI database. In fact, this smartphone is a clone of the ROG Phone 9 series and has similar specifications.

ASUS Zenfone 12 Ultra

ASUS wants to increase competition in the smartphone market. The company launched the Zenfone 11 Ultra smartphone a few months ago. So, the brand will launch the Zenfone 12 Ultra at a later date. According to the IMEI database, this smartphone will have the model number ASUSAI2501H.

Should be noted that the Zenfone 12 Ultra and the ROG Phone 9 series will have the same features. We saw the same example with the Zenfone 11 Ultra and ROG Phone 8 series this year. According to the IMEI Database, the model number of the ROG Phone 9 will be ASUSAI2501D.

ASUS Zenfone 12 Ultra and ROG Phone 9 series will be powered by the same processor. The smartphones will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. Both smartphones will come with at least 12 GB of RAM. The ROG Phone 9 series will also feature lighting and trigger buttons for gaming.

Unfortunately, there is no information on when these two smartphones will be introduced. However, previous models Zenfone 11 Ultra and ROG Phone 8 series were introduced this year. Therefore, it’s very likely that these two smartphones will be introduced in 2025. More information is likely to emerge in the future, both in terms of specifications and official launch dates. We are eagerly waiting to see what these two smartphones have to offer.
