Rolls-Royce Spectre Surpasses Expectations with a 291-Mile Range

The 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre, an all-electric luxury car, has surpassed expectations with its EPA range. It can travel up to 291 miles on a single charge with its 22-inch wheels, exceeding the initial estimate of 260+ miles. This figure, however, is still less than the 323-mile range estimated under Europe’s WLTP standards, which tend to be higher than the EPA’s.

The vehicle has four variations with slightly different specifications

This impressive vehicle comes in four variations, each with a different range based on wheel size and design. The 23-inch wheel version has a 266-mile range, while the Black Badge edition offers 280 miles with 22-inch wheels and 264 miles with 23-inch wheels. Although these numbers are respectable, they don’t quite match up to the longest-range luxury models like the Lucid Air or Mercedes-Benz EQS.

Under the hood, the Spectre is powered by a 102-kilowatt-hour battery, hinting at a shared battery pack with the BMW i7. This connection isn’t surprising, considering Rolls-Royce is part of the BMW Group. The battery supports fast charging, reaching 80% in just 34 minutes. The BMW i7 xDrive60, for comparison, has a range of 298-317 miles, depending on the wheel size.

The Rolls-Royce Spectre boasts a dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain, delivering 430 kilowatts and up to 900 Nm of torque. This power enables it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, a remarkable feat given its weight of 6,559 lbs.

In terms of energy consumption, the Spectre with 22-inch wheels is estimated at 81 MPGe, or about 416 watt-hours per mile. The 23-inch wheel version consumes 9.3% more energy. This increased consumption is expected due to its larger wheels and heavier build. The Black Badge edition consumes slightly more energy, reducing its range, but offering a distinct style that may appeal to certain buyers.

Electric vehicle technology is rapidly advancing, becoming increasingly prevalent in the automotive industry. However, this progress has not yet spread to other transportation sectors. While the concept of electric flying cars has emerged, air and sea travel continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels. In an effort to address this issue, Rolls-Royce is exploring the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a renewable fuel derived from waste, as an alternative to traditional jet fuel. Rolls-Royce Confirms All of Its Current Engines Can Run On 100 Percent SAF

Efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels have been ongoing for a long time, primarily due to the limited nature of fossil energy and its presence in specific locations worldwide. One of the best alternatives developed over time is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), produced from renewable sources such as waste oils, vegetable oils, and algae.

SAF, set to be the future standard in the aviation industry, has been tested by blending it with jet fuel for a while due to efficiency concerns. However, Rolls-Royce has announced that its engines are ready to operate using 100% sustainable aviation fuel. The company conducted a series of tests to convince the world of this alternative.

In the tests carried out at Rolls-Royce’s facility in Canada, the Trent 700, 800, 900, 1000, XWB-84, XWB-97, 7000, BR725, and Pearl 700, 15, and 10X aircraft engines were used. The tests were concluded entirely successfully, and the CEO of the company, Tufan Erginbilgiç, made the following statements regarding the matter:

“Announcing that all our currently produced engines are compatible with 100% SAF is a significant step for both Rolls-Royce and the general aviation industry. This is also strong evidence of our commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and supporting customers in reaching this goal.”

SAF indeed has the potential to revolutionize the aviation sector and phase out conventional jet fuels. However, whether it will become a true standard is currently uncertain. Who knows, perhaps electric aircraft engines will become much more sensible options when the time comes.

Rolls-Royce Debuts First Pure Electric Car in China

Rolls-Royce has introduced its first all-electric car, the Shining, at the Shanghai Auto Show. The vehicle was originally launched as the Rolls-Royce Spectre in October 2022. The car is equipped with a 430 kW motor, producing 900 Nm of torque and can reach a top speed of 250 km/h with an acceleration time of 4.5 seconds. The Shining’s 102 kWh battery pack has a range of 585 km. The interior is inspired by the night sky and features starlight doors, a starry sky roof, and Rolls-Royce’s embroidered logo pillows. The car’s starting price in China is 5.75 million Yuan ($8.3 million), with delivery expected in Q4 2023.

The Shining’s exterior follows the brand’s design language, with a classic Parthenon straight waterfall grille, a slip-back shape, and a double-door design, giving it a sporty feel. The car’s parking space features a split taillight design, with integrated turn signals and brake lights. Rolls-Royce has made significant strides to reduce its carbon footprint, and the Shining’s all-electric powertrain is environmentally friendly while providing the smooth, quiet ride expected of a Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce Develops World’s First Hydrogen-Fueled Aircraft Engine

Electric vehicles are getting more popular day by day. However, the limits of this technology have not been overcome yet. For example, only land vehicles are using electricity today. However, the search for environmentalist solutions in the sector continues. Rolls-Royce and easyJet today confirmed they have set a new aviation milestone with the world’s first run of a modern aero engine on hydrogen.

Rolls-Royce tests hydrogen-fueled aircraft engine in aviation world first

The ground test was conducted on an early concept demonstrator using green hydrogen created by wind and tidal power. It marks a major step towards proving that hydrogen could be a zero-carbon aviation fuel of the future and is a key proof point in the decarbonisation strategies of both Rolls-Royce and easyJet.

Both companies have set out to prove that hydrogen can safely and efficiently deliver power for civil aero engines and are already planning a second set of tests, with a longer-term ambition to carry out flight tests. The test took place at an outdoor test facility at MoD Boscombe Down, UK, using a converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A regional aircraft engine. Green hydrogen for the tests was supplied by EMEC (European Marine Energy Centre), generated using renewable energy at their hydrogen production and tidal test facility on Eday in the Orkney Islands, UK.

Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Grant Shapps, said: “The UK is leading the global shift to guilt-free flying, and today’s test by Rolls-Royce and easyJet is an exciting demonstration of how business innovation can transform the way we live our lives. “This is a true British success story, with the hydrogen being used to power the jet engine today produced using tidal and wind energy from the Orkney Islands of Scotland – and is a prime example of how we can work together to make aviation cleaner while driving jobs across the country.”

Grazia Vittadini, Chief Technology Officer, Rolls-Royce, said: “The success of this hydrogen test is an exciting milestone. We only announced our partnership with easyJet in July and we are already off to an incredible start with this landmark achievement. We are pushing the boundaries to discover the zero carbon possibilities of hydrogen, which could help reshape the future of flight.”

Johan Lundgren, CEO of easyJet, said: “This is a real success for our partnership team. We are committed to continuing to support this ground-breaking research because hydrogen offers great possibilities for a range of aircraft, including easyJet-sized aircraft. That will be a huge step forward in meeting the challenge of net zero by 2050.”

Following analysis of this early concept ground test, the partnership plans a series of further rig tests leading up to a full-scale ground test of a Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 jet engine. The partnership is inspired by the global, UN-backed Race to Zero campaign that both companies have signed up to, committing to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Rolls-Royce’s all-electric aircraft makes its maiden flight!

The aviation industry is undergoing a seemingly silent revolution that may have a massive impact in the nearest future. Several aircraft manufacturers are exploring the huge benefits of electric engines in their operations and Rolls-Royce has joined this growing class. The company has just completed the maiden voyage of its all-electric aircraft.

The Rolls-Royce all-electric aircraft is aptly named Spirit of Innovation, completed its maiden 15-minute voyage, thus signposting the beginning of an intensive flight testing phase for the company that affords it to log important performance data on the aircraft. The main focus of the testing will be on the Spirit of Innovation’s electrical and propulsion system, according to Rolls-Royce.

The Spirit of Innovation is a one-seat airplane that has, in Rolls-Royce’s view, the most power-dense battery pack ever assembled for any aircraft. The aircraft is powered by a 6000 cell battery pack which delivers about 500HP with a three-motor powertrain. The aircraft, according to Rolls-Royce will have a top speed in the range of 300 miles per hour.

Rolls-Royce has made significant progress in the development of this aircraft despite some challenges that led to missing the initial target of 2020 for the maiden flight of the Spirit of Innovation. The aircraft also underwent successful ground testing about six months back through the taxi trials. The company is also working at developing an air taxi in partnership with Tecnam, as it pursues its objective of delivering all-electric aircraft for the commuter market.

The expected benefits in the ultimate transition of air travel to electric-powered aircraft are massive, as it will cut down significantly the greenhouse emission attributed to air travel. However, some fundamental challenges still need to be overcome including finding the right balance and weight that will provide optimal performance of such electric aircraft. It is known that electric vehicles are much heavier than gas-powered cars, and this is also applicable to aircraft.

The collaborative engagement for the Spirit of Innovation’s maiden flight also includes The UK government and Aerospace Technology Institute which provided funding. Even though we may be several years away from a commercial all-electric flight, this milestone is a move in the right direction.
