Samsung has over the years garnered a formidable reputation for itself as a brand that pushes regular software updates to its smartphones. The brand’s reputation for pushing regular updates is unblemished and that is once again proven with the cessation of updates for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ after four solid years of regular updates.

DroidLife noticed recently that Samsung has removed the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ from the list of models that are eligible for security updates. Other members of the Galaxy S8 series which include the Galaxy S8 Active and S8 Lite are still on the list, meaning their software support journey is yet to come to an end. We should point out that the duo was launched months after the flagship models emerged.

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were both launched in April 2017. That means the smartphones had received 4 years of regular software updates. This is pretty impressive as it sets Samsung apart from the pack. Just what the market leader wants. However, the Galaxy S8/S8+ didn’t receive the Android 10 update, having received two major Android updates of Android 8 and 9.

Although Google smartphones are usually the first to get a new Android version, the company doesn’t even provide software support for up to four years. So we doubt if anyone will feel bad about this. The tech giant has even been preparing the mind of users after it moved the Galaxy S8/S8+ to the category of models eligible for quarterly security updates since last year.

Going by this trend, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ which also receive quarterly security updates may likely end their journey around this time next year when they clock four years post-release. The Galaxy S10 which was released in 2019 is the oldest model still on the monthly security patch schedule but that may also end soon as the company seems to offer three years of monthly updates and one year of quarterly push before pulling the plug on software support for the flagship models.
