The company is planning on launching new image sensors as well, which would enable it to better compete with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/sony/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sony</a> in the camera market.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-329319 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403.png?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="1920" height="1080" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403.png 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403-768x432.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403-1024x576.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403-696x392.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403-1068x601.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Screenshot-403-747x420.png 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.sammobile.com/news/samsung-catch-up-sony-isocell-camera-sensor-business/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>SamMobile</em> </a>report, the brand&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-lsi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">System LSI</a>, a unit that makes its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/isocell/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ISOCELL</a> camera sensors, is planning on investing heavily to improve its cameras while also widening its product portfolio as well. For those unaware, Samsung and Sony are the market leaders for the image sensor market, with the former holding 29 percent market share while the latter accounts for a 29 percent market share.</p>
<p>While Sony does lead the market at the moment, the South Korean tech giant did manage to raise its market share over the last couple of years. Furthermore, the company is also working on launching new and more powerful camera sensors as well to better compete with Sony in the market. This includes a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/23/samsung-50mp-isocell-gn2-camera-sensor-dual-pixel-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">new 50 megapixel</a> camera sensor that is one of the best sensors as of right now. Meanwhile, the company is also reported to be working on an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/11/samsung-200mp-sensors-smartphones-launch-soon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">upcoming 200 megapixel</a> sensor as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-342300 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung 0.7μm ISOCELL Image Sensor" width="1000" height="750" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Samsung-07micrometer-image-sensors-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></p>
<p>Through this, Samsung is also expected to close the market share gap between Sony to within just a 10 percent difference from the Japanese brand. The new 200 megapixel ISOCELL sensor will reportedly also feature 16 in 1 pixel binning and 8K video recording support. On the other hand, the company was also hinted to make a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/08/samsung-working-on-600-mp-camera/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">600 megapixel sensor</a> sometime in the future, although, this is said to be for self driving cars rather than smartphones.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.strategyanalytics.com/access-services/components/handset-components/market-data/report-detail/smartphone-apps-processor-market-share-tracker-q1-2021-qualcomm-and-mediatek-capitalise-on-hisilicon's-challenges">report adds</a> that 5G application processors accounted for 41 percent of the total smartphone APs shipped in Q1 2021. Among them, entry-level 5G APs are sought after, such as Snapdragon 480 and Dimensity 700, which will help phone makers to bring the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g">5G connectivity</a> to lower price tiers.</p>
<p>Qualcomm and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> benefited the most with the forced exit of HiSilicon from the market due to several trade restrictions. Both companies gained double-digit shipment growth in Q1 2021. On the other hand, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hisilicon">HiSilicon</a>&#8216;s smartphone AP shipments declined 88 percent in the same timeframe, per Strategy Analytics&#8217; estimates.</p>
<p>Apple, Samsung LSI, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/unisoc">Unisoc</a> also witnessed growth in shipments as well as revenue in the first quarter. With the increase in demand post-pandemic and new technologies like 5G, the growth momentum is expected to continue throughout this year.</p>
<p>Huawei has already <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/huawei-sells-honor-subsidiary-to-zhixin-new-information-technology-co-ltd/">sold off Honor</a> to make it an independent brand so that it doesn&#8217;t have to adhere to the trade restrictions and can continue to grow. Now, it remains to be seen if Huawei will spin-off HiSilicon into an independent chip business.</p>

To meet the ever-increasing demand and evolve further, the Korean giant is investing $115 billion (133 trillion won) in its Samsung LSI and Samsung foundry business by 2030. Samsung wants to become the world&#8217;s leader in semiconductors by taking on <a href="//www.goandroid.co.in/tag/intel/">Intel</a> and <a href="//www.goandroid.co.in/tag/qualcomm/">Qualcomm</a>.</p>

<p>According to plan, <a href="//www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/">Samsung</a> will invest $63.7 billion (KWR 73 trillion) in R&amp;D in South Korea. Whereas, the remaining $52.1 billion (KWR 60 trillion) is dedicated to the upliftment of production facilities and infrastructure. It will result in creation of 15000 additional jobs. The investment will dispense at $9.5 billion a year until 2030.</p>
<p>Samsung will collaborate with fabless companies &#8211; who design chips but don&#8217;t have production facilities in South Korea. It will help the Korean giant to manufacture more refined products within a lesser period.</p>
<p>The new plan to become the largest semiconductor player will help the company to diversify its portfolio. Samsung is eyeing to tap business from increasing opportunities like <a href="//www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g/">5G</a>, VR, AR, cloud gaming, IoT, etc.</p>
<p>Currently, Samsung&#8217;s multiple business units are helping each other to resist the ongoing economic slowdown. Unlike other companies, Samsung is still managing to keep up with the long term goals without any cost-cutting.</p>
