<p>We already know that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple </a>is shifting to the USB Type-C standard for its upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-iphone-15/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 15</a> lineup. However, it is not all good news, as the company appears to be making sure that only a certified data cable will be properly supported.</p>

<h2>Apple iPhone 15 USB-C will be limited in functionality</h2>

<p>For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/09/images-of-usb-c-ports-on-iphone-15-series-leaked/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shifting to USB-C</a> over its existing Lightning port to comply with the new regulations from the European Union. Now, known tipster Majin Bu shared a bunch of images that reveal certain charging components of the upcoming iPhone 15. Looking at the images, a new chipset can be seen, which is labeled as the 3LD3 chip.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="769" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-1024x769.jpeg?x10805" alt="Apple iPhone 15 USB-C" class="wp-image-558250" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-1024x769.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-768x577.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-1536x1154.jpeg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-696x523.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-1068x802.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-1920x1442.jpeg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-559x420.jpeg 559w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-80x60.jpeg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C-265x198.jpeg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Apple-iPhone-15-USB-C.jpeg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The component will likely allow the upcoming iPhone 15 models to verify and distinguish between an Apple-certified cable and other third-party adapters. Apart from the verification process, the brand may also be planning to limit certain functionalities with this chip. Another known tipster ShrimpApplePro claimed that the third-party cables will have limitations in data and charging speeds. </p>

<p>In other words, non-certified cables won&#8217;t offer the full benefits of the new port changes. Apple is expected to launch the new iPhone 15 series next month, with the new A17 Bionic, thinner bezels, titanium frame, and a heftier price tag. So stick around for more as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.</p>

<p>There have been rumors for some time that the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/07/17/apple-iphone-15-pink-green-colors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> iPhone 15</a> lineup will ditch the Lightning port in favor of USB-C. They were further fueled by the recent leak of alleged images of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-iphone-15/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 15</a> USB-C connector ports. This is yet another indication that Apple is getting ready to switch from Lightning to USB-C, which is the common charging port for most other smartphones.</p>

<h2><strong>iPhone 15 with USB-C port</strong></h2>

<p>Leakers<a href="https://twitter.com/lipilipsi/status/1688760010522914816?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> @lipilipsi</a> and<a href="https://twitter.com/John011235/status/1688780047207878656?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow"> @John011235</a> have shared the alleged image of the iPhone 15-series USB-C port. The images show the Type-C port attached to flexible PCB components for the standard iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These images suggest that all 2023 iPhone 15 models will feature USB-C ports, a change that has been rumored for some time.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="585" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-Series-USB-C-Connectors.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-556546" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-Series-USB-C-Connectors.jpg 585w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-Series-USB-C-Connectors-293x300.jpg 293w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-Series-USB-C-Connectors-410x420.jpg 410w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-Series-USB-C-Connectors-356x364.jpg 356w" sizes="(max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px" /></figure></div>

<p>Reliable leakster such as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have consistently said that Apple will make this switch with their upcoming iPhone.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For those unaware, Apple is expected to make the shift from the Lightning port to the USB-C port to comply with the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/05/06/eu-warns-apple-against-limiting-functionality-uncertified-usb-c-cables-iphones/"> European Union’s ruling</a> to set a standard port across the industry.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Different USB-C ports on Pro and Non-Pro models?</strong></h2>

<p>Even though iPhones will soon ditch the infamous Lighting port, Apple may restrict the cables that can be used with the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 lineup, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo believes that only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will have USB 3.2 ports. While the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have USB 2.0 ports.&nbsp; This would mean that the higher-end models would support faster data transfer speeds. And the lower-end models would be limited to slower speeds.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="600" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-with-USB-C-Port.jpg?x10805" alt="iPhone 15 with USB-C Port" class="wp-image-556525" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-with-USB-C-Port.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-with-USB-C-Port-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-with-USB-C-Port-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-with-USB-C-Port-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/iPhone-15-with-USB-C-Port-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /><figcaption>Image: 9to5Mac</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Additionally, there have been rumors that the iPhone 15 models will only officially support USB-C accessories that have received approval from Apple&#8217;s Made for iPhone (MFi) program. This means cables and chargers that are not MFi certified may not work with the iPhone 15. We will know about all these at Apple&#8217;s annual iPhone event, which is expected to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/08/04/apple-iphone-15-launch-september-13/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">take place in September 2023</a>. </p>

<p>Apple is preparing to introduce the highly anticipated iPhone 15 series in September. As always, the phone is expected to come with performance improvements and new features, but this year, it will feature a radical change. However, this year will see a significant change, as the company is compelled to adhere to European Union regulations. For the first time, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> will release an iPhone equipped with a USB-C port, rather than the traditional Lightning port. Despite this, the company is not particularly eager to implement the change. Recent information even suggests that Apple initially considered an iPhone 15 with a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lightning-port/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lightning port</a>, before ultimately opting for the USB-C. Here are the details…</p>

<h2><strong>Apple Considered iPhone 15 With Lightning Port Before Swapping to USB-C</strong></h2>

<p>As you might expect, developing a flagship-level smartphone is no easy task. Companies need to start the development process well in advance. Apple is no exception in this regard. Whenever the company introduces a new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/usb-c-iphone-15/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone</a>, they have already begun working on the next model. This often leads to some information about the phone being leaked early on.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Some details about USB-C on the iPhone 15:<br><br>It was in testing as far back as January 2022, and pretty much all designs since March 2022 have had the USB-C port instead of lightning.<br><br>There was a version with a lightning port very early on, but it was quickly scrapped.</p>&mdash; Unknownz21 <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.1.0/72x72/1f308.png" alt="🌈" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> (@URedditor) <a href="https://twitter.com/URedditor/status/1648326524045541377?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 18, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
</div></figure>

<p>According to a researcher on Twitter by the username Unknownz21, Apple prepared the first prototype models for the iPhone 15 in January 2022. However, the decision to use USB-C wasn&#8217;t finalized until March. From that point on, work was focused exclusively on versions with USB-C, although &#8220;There was a version with a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lightning-port/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lightning port</a> very early on, but it was quickly scrapped.&#8221;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="512" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port-1024x512.jpeg?x10805" alt="iPhone 15 USB-C" class="wp-image-531200" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port-1024x512.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port-300x150.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port-768x384.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port-696x348.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port-1068x534.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port-840x420.jpeg 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/apple-iphone-15-usb-c-lightning-port.jpeg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Although the European Union forced the company to abandon the Lightning port, this development was not entirely surprising. For years, Apple has been using the USB-C port in its other products. However, the company persisted in using the Lightning port for iPhones and AirPods. This led to users within the ecosystem expressing frustration over having to use different chargers for different devices. Additionally, many people criticized the Lightning port for being slow. However, the European Union&#8217;s solution may not be permanent.</p>

<p>Apple, which dislikes being dependent on outside, may not need to rely on USB-C charging for too long. The company has been investing in a wireless charging technology called MagSafe for some time. If they can also enable data transfer using this feature, USB-C might remain only a temporary solution.<a href="https://twitter.com/URedditor/status/1648326524045541377"></a></p>

<p>The countdown has begun for an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/17/leaked-image-shows-iphone-15-pro-with-a-usb-c-port/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone with a USB-C port</a>. The internet has already begun to celebrate this necessary change, thanks to leaked images. The use of USB-C in iPhones and AirPods means a single cable can be used for all devices. Although it is a nice improvement that no more Lightning cables will be needed, iPhone 15 may not be compatible with Android. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>The new iPhone is sure to use USB-C, but it may not be compatible with Android</strong></h2>

<p>The iPhone <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/17/leaked-image-shows-iphone-15-pro-with-a-usb-c-port/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">15 Pro is rumored to use the USB-C</a>, marking a significant shift for Apple as it moves closer to Android phones. While this may come as good news for users who have long been clamoring for a universal charging standard, it may not necessarily mean that the iPhone 15 will be compatible with Android devices.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" width="960" height="598" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/iPhone-15-Pro-USB-C.png?x10805" alt="iPhone 15 Pro USB C" class="wp-image-516211" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/iPhone-15-Pro-USB-C.png 960w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/iPhone-15-Pro-USB-C-300x187.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/iPhone-15-Pro-USB-C-768x478.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/iPhone-15-Pro-USB-C-696x434.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/iPhone-15-Pro-USB-C-674x420.png 674w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></figure></div>

<p>According to a recent report from Mobile China News, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>&#8216;s decision to switch to the USB-C interface may be driven by the pressure from the European Union. The European Council has mandated that all electronic devices sold in the EU must use the Type-C charging interface from 2024. If Apple does not comply, it may not be able to sell the new iPhone in the European market.</p>

<p>This move to USB-C is a departure from Apple&#8217;s longstanding use of the proprietary Lightning port, which has been a point of contention for users who have to carry multiple cables or adapters for their devices. USB-C is a popular standard for charging and data transfer, and it is used by most Android devices.</p>

<p>While the move to USB-C is a step in the right direction for Apple, there is still a concern that the new iPhone may not be compatible with Android devices. This may be due to Apple&#8217;s desire to keep its data confidential and secure, which has been a key selling point for the company. If the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-15-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 15</a> uses a USB-C interface that is not compatible with Android, it may create a data barrier for users who switch between devices.</p>

<p>From a user&#8217;s perspective, the lack of universal compatibility could also be a concern in terms of environmental impact. With the proliferation of electronic devices, there is a growing need to reduce e-waste by using more sustainable charging standards. The use of proprietary charging ports has been criticized for contributing to electronic waste and making it harder to recycle devices.</p>

<p>It remains to be seen how Apple will address these concerns. While the move to USB-C is a positive development, it would be even better if the new iPhone could be universally compatible with Android devices. This would not only make it easier for users to switch between devices but also help reduce e-waste and promote more sustainable practices in the tech industry.</p>

It’s too early to believe the claim since there’s still time for the iPhone 15 and the Cupertino based tech giant will unveil the iPhone 14 later this year. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kuo’s claim is based on his latest survey i.e. talking to suppliers instead of anything based on evidence. He adds that the new iPhone will ditch the Lightning port in favour of the USB-C port. It will improve the iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware design but the final spec details will depend on iOS support. The analysts states that existing USB-C related suppliers of Apple are expected to become the market focus in the next two-three years attributing to vast orders of iPhones and accessories adoption of the USB-C ports. This also hints that Kuo anticipates Apple to drop the port altogether. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Additionally, the EU is closing in on introducing a new law that will require smartphone makers to remove all proprietary charging ports and switch to USB-C which is considered to be the gold standard for charging and data transfers. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Currently, Apple’s iPhones come with Lightning ports. The brand adopted the USB-C port for Mac back in 2015 and the iPad made the switch from Lightning to USB-C in 2018. This left the iPhone as the core Apple device with the Lightning socket. As per reports, there was a view that the iPhone will continue to retain the older connector until it goes entirely portless. </span></p>
<p>The iPhone 15 with USB-C will debut in the second half of next year. Till then we can expect more developments to crop up.</p>
