Exclusive: Hands On With The UMI Iron Flagship [Video]

by Joe 25

We have been hearing a lot about UMI’s latest flagship, the UMI Iron, thanks to the company’s carefully crafted teasers. Till now, we had some details about the specs of the handset as well as the design, but now, we have got the first set of hands on pictures of the device.

The overall design is more or less the same as the one shown in the previous leaks. The phone features an all metal body measuring just 7.9mm in thickness. The body looks well crafted and solid, with both the power and the volume button lying on the left hand side. The right side is totally clean. As for the top, you will find a headphone jack while at the bottom, you have the USB port.

The design looks quite good. But if you looks carefully, it seems to be inspired from HTC’s One M9, which is actually a good thing considering that the phone has received positive reviews for its design.

Up front, above the display, you can see the camera as well as sensors on top. The area below the display is clean, thanks to the on screen buttons. On the display, you can clearly see the thick bezels on all the four sides. But that’s not really a complaint, as the overall package looks quite good.

The back features a two tone design, with the camera and the dual LED flash lying right on top. At the center, you can see the UMI logo while down below, there’s the speakers.

As for the specs, the phone will feature MT6753 octa-core 64-bit chip with 3GB RAM and 16GB of storage. There will be a 5.5-inch display with full HD 1080p resolution. At the back, there will be a 13MP Sony IMX214 camera sensor along with an 8MP shooter. Other features include 4G LTE connectivity, 3350mAh battery and Android 5.1 Lollipop version.

Hello, what about the antutu scoring?

    • Eric

The Antutu is predicted to score big. Although injured in his previous match we are very expectant of more scoring in the future.

      • Claude

Great thanks! Sounds nice then… Above 40K?
I’ve read that 673 is lower the 6752? True?
I balance between Emax & Iron.. Your advice?

        • Biborno Bornil

claude, dude it scores in ANTUTU only 32K :p with mt6752 lenovo k3 note without 1GB RAM can score 46K in Antutu :p
Its camera is way better than lenovo k3 note and battery is 480mah bigger, I’ve to admit that. If you are not a gamer then go for it, but I can’t 🙁

          • Golam Kibria

Biborno Bornil what’s your opinion about umi iron, I am planning to buy from hasib bhai. I am a gamer so needs your advice.

          • Biborno Bornil

if you are a gamer, NEVER EVER go for mt6753, just forget about it. Gaming image rendering image and quality plus speed is severely low in this chipset. Go for lenovo k3 note, its a device of brand and handy for every gamer for rough use.
Features of biometric sensor? lol, in which aspect you are going to use it? only for locking your phone? :p

the notification light is my favor in this phone

  • ding

Even if this phone looks nice we had to learn from the past models that UMI is not a trustworthy brand. So I look for an other company which I will support with my money. 😉

    • Riccardo Benzoni

paid comment from a competitor in 3..2..1…

    • claude

I had X2 and was very glad with to be honest

    • hugo26

Thats not true at all, I think u mean we learned that UMI is very reliable and the UMI Zero even got some international fame from sites like PCadvisor making recommendations to buy the phone and even featured on Sites like gizmodo. Infact i still have a UMI zero.

Kinda’ disappointing specs: when the first teasers appeared, the Iron supposed to have QHD screen, Helio proc, etc. Now I see only a 1.3Ghz proc… I mean really? Isn’t that kinda’ low? Is it a typo maybe? And where is the advertised heart sensor, direct audio path, Hi-Fi sound, etc etc. Not to mention the huge screen bezels. Please Chinese manufacturers, stop this stupid “bezel-less” trend. The only phone that can claim this is Nubia Z9. I personally prefer the “classic bezels” instead of the large black bezels that keep appearing in all new phones.

    • Gal

Well, even 2013’s LG G2 has the same if not thinner bezels than the Nubia Z9.
And yes, I agree about the specs.

      • Cpaun

Nubia Z9 has 0.8mm side bezels. I doubt that LG G2 has smaller bezels than that.

        • Gal

Well, the G2 and the Nubia Z9 are both 5.2″. The G2 weights 50(!) Grams less and has better screen to body ratio. I can’t believe the Z9 weights 192g! That’s just too much.

    • fffff

Incorrect, the onlyphone that can claim bezeless issharp aquos crystal xX

      • Cpaun

Ok I admit, that phone has also very small bezels, but I think Nubia Z9 has even smaller bezels (0.8mm in fact). I’m talking of course about side bezels, the great advantage of the Aquos is its very small top bezel.

    • Ferkad

I have a Oppo find 7 QHD and a Ulefone be pro which is only HD. Most people select the Ulefone as best screen. With HD on a 5,5″ you cannot see the pixels ! I think it is time to stop with this silly race for more pixels for nothing. Only using more power.

      • Cpaun

Yes I actually agree with you. But still, they promised one thing, and in the end delivered lower specs.

  • Linus

I have heard that UMI has had some issues with previous models, but I can’t wait to review this one. New model, new story. One interesting thing about UMI is that they offer a great design for the price. And the metal unibody design is a way to go

  • Tinker

    No 800MHz LTE band?

  • Paap Mrittu

That’s not good. I hope that it is an engineering sample.

    • Zoealandy

      Yes, absolutely it’s engineering sample

  • Gal

I love the Chinese phones market and I’m tempted all the time to try some + this phone looks very cool (I liked the Zero as well).. but..although far from new, my LG G2 is still superior to most of the Chinese phones.. and you can get a G2 for under 200$.
Camera is better, it’s lighter, faster (40K antutu on LP 5.0.1), battery lasts much longer than MTK based devices (about 4 hours SOT with 30-50 hours total) and almost no heat issues at all.. so..right, the front camera is better here and there is one extra GB of RAM..but that’s all. Why would you not get an aging G2 instead? I’m sure the overall experience is better on it.

  • Ferkad

They say the GPS is fast. Most Chinese phones have a poor GPS or a poor camera. Ulefone Be Pro has an excellent GPS but a poor camera. Ulefone Be Touch has an excellent camera but a poor GPS. Is it possible that this phone has everything good ?
