Just recently, Xiaomi restructured its smartphone business, splitting its smartphone business into the Redmi and Mi brand, both independent of each other. The Chinese tech giant has announced a further restructuring of the mobile phone business group in the face of increased competition in the local market. This is coming just a month after it spun off the Redmi sub-brand from the Mi brand in an attempt to give it a separate identity and marketing drive. According to the report by Chinese blog Tencent Tech reports, the restructuring sees the establishment of a new advisory team under the smartphone business group. The team is led by Zhu Lei who was before this appointment head of sales. The new structure also has in place an operational team controlling product expenses within the company. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun is said to have hinted that the restructuring is in a bid to enhance the company’s operation and strategy in its smartphone business.

In a related development, Xiaomi has also reportedly established a department to conduct research and development into new technologies for touch control of mobile phone displays. Lei Jun made the announcements in an internal letter to employees. All efforts are geared towards improving the company’s performance in the domestic market which has not been too satisfactory. The company only managed to achieve a 1.3% YoY growth last year despite its success in overseas markets like India.
