As seen at the MWC 2019, LG’s Display Speaker technology has moved one step ahead from being a prototype device. LG Electronics has even introduced a new Crystal Sound OLED technology on LG G8 ThinQ. The new technology works as a sound amplifier via vibrations of the entire display surface. These vibrations, in turn, produce sound from the whole OLED display. In a step ahead, today LG Electronics has filed for the “Display Speaker” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on March 6.

As spotted by our source, the new patent filing listed in “Class 9” carries a description of “audio speakers for smartphones; smartphones in the form of wristwatches; displays for smartphones; OLED displays that function as audio amplifiers and audio speakers.” LG didn’t add the Crystal Sound OLED technology term in the whole description of the patent. But as far as going through the description in a logical way we can confirm that it is the same “Display Speaker” technology as seen on the LG G8 ThinQ.

Even, from the listing, it can be speculated that LG is working on to bring the new technology to smartwatches. Eventually, if everything goes well, LG will add this new display speaker technology in the upcoming smartwatches. There can be many other ways through which the company can fully use its potential, but right now LG has applied a patent depicting its use in smartwatches and smartphone devices.

Further, there are many other challenges that LG first has to address before meddling it on the smartwatches. The size constraint and its design are the significant challenges that the company may face while adding it to the wearable devices.

Talking about the LG Crystal Sound OLED display, the technology uses the display as diaphgram to generation vibrations which ultimately helps to produce sound. The new technology will further enhance the sound quality of mobile devices. It also improves clarity and makes the sound more subtle and noticeable.
