Just a few days ago, it was announced that Sony has merged its mobile, TV, audio, and camera divisions into one new division called Electronics Products and Solutions. Now, a new report says the mobile phone division will lay off half of its staff within a year.

At the moment, the Sony Xperia staff strength is 4,000 which means 2,000 workers will lose their jobs between now and March 2020. Sony already said it plans to reduce its spending by half and it appears laying off workers is a part of its plans to do so.

Sony already revealed it is shutting down its smartphone plant in China and moving production to Thailand. Last year, it also closed its mobile business in some regions. Reports say it is going to be focusing on Europe and East Asia for now.

With respect to the layoff, Sony says some of its Japanese staff will be employed in other divisions while those in China and Europe will have the option to voluntary retire. The restructuring and cut in operations expenses is expected to result in a profitable fiscal year for Sony.
