Various smartphone makers are now gearing up to launch their first 5G smartphones. Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus, ZTE, Samsung and LG have already launched 5G phones in multiple markets. Other brands too are expected to release 5G smartphones in the remaining months of the year. Currently available 5G phones mostly feature topnotch specs because of which they carry hefty price tags. A fresh report on Digital Trends states that HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas revealed to it a cheap Nokia 5G phone that will cost around half of the exisiting 5G phones will be arriving next year in the U.S.
In the U.S., Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G and LG V50 ThinQ 5G phones are priced around $1,000. Currently, the most affordable 5G phone in the U.S is the Moto Z3 or Moto Z4 that comes with a 5G Moto Mod. It is not really a 5G smartphone as it requires users to snap a 5G Moto Mod to the phone to connect to 5G networks. With 5G Moto Mod, the Moto Z3 is available with a price tag of around $800 through Verizon in the U.S. The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G that can be availed without a 5G data plan ranges between 800 euros to 900 euros. It is not yet available in the U.S., but it expected to release in collaboration with Sprint in the near future. Hence, it can be assumed that Nokia’s 5G phone that will be arriving in 2020 could be priced around $500 to $650.
Sarvikas further said the company is working with silicon vendors and the U.S. carriers in order to release its 5G phone in the U.S. The company has been making efforts to expand its presence in the country. Apart from selling unlock phones through Amazon and Best Buy, it is selling five smartphones through Verizon, AT&T and Cricket Mobile.
At present, there is no information available on the name of the device that Sarvikas is talking about. Probably, the phone debut first in other markets like Europe or China, before arriving in the U.S. As far as this year is concerned, HMD Global is expected to announce phones like Nokia 7.2, Nokia 6.2, Nokia 5.2 and few features phones at the IFA 2019 in September and it is also expected to announce Nokia 9.1 PureView 5G flagship phone by the end of the year.
