A few days ago, Lu Weibing, revealed the Redmi K30 will have 5G support when it launches. There have been speculations that the phone will arrive later this year seeing as the time between successors for Redmi phones is no longer a year. However, an official announcement made today revealed it won’t launch this year.

The announcement was made on Weibo and it states that the Redmi 5G phone will arrive in 2020. Although it doesn’t expressly say the Redmi K30, we can deduce the Redmi K30 will not launch this year since it will have 5G support and no 5G Redmi phone until next year. There is no specific quarter, so we can’t say if it will be early next year or later.

Redmi 5G phone

With the launch of the Redmi K30 5G smartphone, more people will be able to afford a 5G smartphone. HMD Global is also planning to announce an affordable Nokia 5G smartphone next year. It will be interesting to see who launches one first.

The Redmi K30 should arrive alongside the Redmi K30 Pro, and the latter should also have 5G support. However, while the Redmi K30 Pro won’t have an issue with what chipset to use (Snapdragon 865), the Redmi K30 sort of does. There is no mid-range chipset with a 5G modem yet. So we can’t speculate which processor will power it. We do believe Qualcomm (or MediaTek) will announce mid-range processors with 5G modems before the year ends or early next year.
