High refresh rate displays are the new craze in the Android market. Companies like OnePlus, ASUS, OPPO, and even Realme have all released at least one high-refresh-rate smartphone in the market. In fact, the ASUS ROG II phone takes the refresh rate all the way up to 120Hz instead of the more common 90Hz. Now, it is being said that Apple will join the high-refresh rate party as well, in 2020.

According to a DigiTimes report, 2020 iPhones could feature 120Hz screens, joining Apple’s existing iPad Pro lineup with the same high-refresh rate. However, next year’s iPhones will likely have a 120Hz refresh rate on an OLED panel unlike the LCD ones found inside the ProMotion iPads.

But it’s not just the new iPhone models. The same DigiTimes report states that smartphones, in general, will come with higher refresh rates in 2020. And unlike this year where we have a number of 90Hz panel smartphones, companies could upgrade the refresh rate to 120Hz or more next year.

Currently, only a handful of smartphones feature a 120Hz display, like the ROG II, Razer Phone 2, and the Sharp Aquos R3. But if this report is to be believed, by 2020, this figure will increase quite significantly. Such high refresh rates would especially benefit gaming-centric smartphones and this niche market has grown a lot this year.

However, with a high refresh rate comes the issue of battery life. Using a dynamic refresh rate will help in optimizing for the best battery performance but it will still be lower than that of a 60Hz screen. As a result, we could see smartphones with larger batteries and faster-charging technologies next year. This speculation isn’t unfounded given that the ROG II with a 120Hz comes with a HUGE 6000mAh battery on board!
