Microsoft’s Surface Duo dual-screen smartphone will launch next year and should be available in time for the holidays. The phone isn’t the first foldable device with a dual-display and it will not be the last. We may even see one from Samsung according to the latest reports.

Apparently, Samsung has been granted a patent for a foldable display by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent was filed back in 2013 but was just granted late last month.

Based on this, Samsung may decide to come up with a competitor to the Microsoft Surface Duo, and with their experience with the Galaxy Fold with respect to software, they may have a better implementation than Microsoft.

Samsung Dual Display Device Patent new

Above is a diagram from the patent. Since it was filed back in 2013 it is understandable why we still have capacitive buttons rather than software buttons. So if Samsung is actually planning a dual-display device, it sure won’t look like what is in the image above.
