Samsung Display has announced a new OLED display that builds on the success of previous models. The new display is said to consume less power and emit less blue light than its previous creations.Samsung Galaxy S20

Samsung Display happens to be a global leader in display panel market, with OLED and LCD technologies and products. The company still manufactures the best OLED panels with the Galaxy S20 recently credited to have the best OLED screen. The new display is said to emit a minimized 6.5% blue light as against 7.5% on previous panels.

Smartphones and other devices produce blue light which has been fingered as the culprit in the disruption of the circadian rhythm of persons. The circadian rhythm is the body’s natural 24-hour clock and blue light disrupts it by tricking the body to think it is daytime all the time. This then suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps control your sleep patterns. When the rhythm is disrupted, it impacts on the quality of sleep. This effect is felt mostly by persons who use their phones immediately before going to sleep.

Apart from the reduced blue light level, the new display is also said to consume 15% less power than the OLED smartphone displays that Samsung released last year. This is especially important in the emerging 5G era where power management is a major issue due to the power-hungry nature of 5G connections. Jee-ho Baek, the vice president of the mobile display strategic marketing team at Samsung Display stated; “5G is expanding into a rapidly commercialised ecosystem where consumers can be connected to 8K as well as 4K streaming services, cloud-based gaming content and infotainment networks, increasing mobile device usage everywhere.”

“Our 5G-optimized OLED display is taking the lead in the 5G era with its crystal clear imagery, distinguished designs, economical power consumption and increasingly eye-protective functionality,” he added.
