A couple of days back, Meizu announced the arrival of 120Hz refresh rate for Meizu 17 Pro via OTA update. Now, it is finally here along with some other additional features. However, the update is only available for media review units for now. In fact, the update is titled as ‘Media Review Device System Update’.

The first major update for Meizu 17 Pro comes with build number Flyme 8.1.1.0A and weighs 803.84MB in size. The update not only bumps up the screen refresh rate but also brings DC Dimming and more.
Here’s a summary of the update that is being rolled out to media review units of Meizu 17 Pro in China.
- Adds 120Hz refresh rate option, in addition to 90Hz
- Adds DC Dimming feature
- Adds easy access to the 129° ultra-wide camera
- Adds HDR video playback
- Adds fast charging while screen turned on
It is interesting why Meizu did not mention anything about 120Hz refresh at the launch. Anyway, it is now available along wit DC Dimming, which should have been present out of the box.
Another notable addition is an option in the camera app to directly switch to the ultra-wide lens. For the unaware, the Flyme camera app uses a swipe mechanism to switch between different cameras, which is not an ideal solution for all users.

The update also brings HDR playback support and fast charging when the display is turned on. The former feature is expected to be available by default but Meizu is just rolling it out now.
As for the latter, the Meizu 17 Pro has probably become the first-ever smartphone from the company to support fast charging while the screen is active. None of the prior devices from the brand support it, however, the previous generation flagships might get this feature via OTA update in the future.
Anyway, as mentioned in the beginning, this update is exclusive to media review units. It will be rolled out to regular retail units soon.
