Samsung and Huawei are the two major smartphone brands that have already launched their foldable smartphones. Now, Apple also seems to set to join the list as the company is working on its own foldable iPhone.

Now, as per the latest report from AppleInsider based on a new patent application filed by Apple, the upcoming foldable iPhone could come with a self-healing display that could fix the normal wear and tear by itself, including scratches and dents.Foldable iPhone Self-Healing Screen Patent

The patent application, named “Electronic Devices With Flexible Display Cover Layers” suggests methods for minimizing damage and doing something when the damage occurs. It hints at mixing rigid and flexible areas for a display and utilizing “self-healing.” However, the company has not mentioned how the process will work.

If the previous reports are to be believed, then the foldable iPhone is designed in such a way that when opened, it has a single continuous display and doesn’t appear to have two separate display panels, even though that is the case.

Foldable iPhone Prototype

Going by the development, there’s a possibility that the self-healing display feature won’t be included in the first generation of foldable iPhones given that the company has already placed a large order with Samsung Display for providing samples for at least one year.

Samsung has been a key supplier of OLED display panels to Apple iPhones for many years. With Samsung Display being a leader in the foldable display market, it is now hoping to dominate the market by increasing its production capacity to 10 million units a year.

Reports indicate that the foldable iPhone could get launched as soon as next year. Meanwhile, the company is currently gearing up to launch its 5G-powered iPhone 12 models in the coming weeks.
