According to an ET report, the known electric vehicles maker has already held preliminary talks with the state for a research and innovation unit in the city. For those unaware, Bengaluru is also home to local EV startups like Ola Mobility, Ather Energy, Mahindra Electric, and more. This move from the local government aims on bringing the world’s most valuable carmaker to the Indian market.

Gaurav Gupta, principal secretary of Karnataka’s commerce and industries department said, “We have offered them all support to set up a research and development center as well as the manufacturing unit.” He further added that Bengaluru has a favorable ecosystem for electric vehicles and Tesla can leverage on that.” At the moment, the talks are just in the early conceptual stages and it is going to be a long drawn process.

Gupta also said that “We have briefed them about how Bengaluru is home to promising EV startups and also component makers and the advantages we offer.” Unfortunately, Tesla has yet to respond to any queries regarding this matter at the moment. But the automobile giant having plans on setting up an R&D center in India would imply an entry into the Indian market, which its CEO, Elon Musk has shown great interest in.
