In August, Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 2 as the successor to the original Galaxy Fold foldable phone that debuted last year. While the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has been available for purchase since September in different markets, the rumor mill has started talking about its successor model. A fresh report by The Elec, a South Korean publication has revealed some of the key features of the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The upcoming Galaxy S21/S30 series of flagship phones are expected to arrive with support for the S Pen stylus. While there are no reports yet that claim Samsung will not launch a Note series phone next year, a recent report claimed that it will be eventually phased out. There is a possibility that the Note lineup could be replaced by the Z Fold series. The latest report states that the Z Fold 3 could be equipped with an S Pen stylus.

In order to bring S Pen support, Samsung will be reportedly adding AES (Active Electrostatic Solution) digitizer technology to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The report also states that the company is planning to increase the thickness of the UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) so that it can withstand the pressure of the S Pen’s tip.

Before the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 2, there were reports that it will come with an S Pen. However, the company did not include it because the Z Fold 2’s UTG was not thick enough. The company uses EMR (Electro-Magnetic Resonance) digitizer for S Pen support on Note series, but this cannot be applied on the foldable screen. Hence, it has reportedly adopted the AES digitizer for the Z Fold 3. It is said that AES offers better performance, but it incurs high production costs.  The thickness of the Z Fold 2’s UTG is 30 micrometers. The report claims that the company will increase the thickness of Z Fold 3’s UTG by twofold.

Recent reports have claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be Samsung’s first device to feature an under-display camera. Also, there are claims that appear from the exterior and inner screens, the Z Fold 3’s hinge will also feature a display.
