India has wielded the big stick again on Chinese interests by adding 43 more apps to its growing list of apps banned in the country. The latest casualties include AliExpress and Lalamove. This latest offensive by the Government of India is the fourth of such clamp-down has now affected a total of 267 Chinese apps. Popular ones include TikTok, Mi Community, PUBG Mobile, WeChat, Weibo, Xender and several others.aliexpress

The reason given by the Indian government for these drastic measures remains that these apps have been found to pose serious security risks and their operations in India will constitute acts that are “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.” Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 was cited as the enabling law that has made provisions for the actions taken in banning the apps.

With the ban still subsisting, none of the previously banned apps have made a return to the Indian market. Tencent has divested its interest from PUBG Mobile and the gaming app is about to make a return under a new licensee.

Recall that the Indian government announced the ban of 59 Chinese apps in June this year including some of the most popular apps such as TikTok, ShareIt, UC Browser, WeChat, CamScanner, and more. In September, 118 more apps were added to the banned apps list.
