MediaTek is now the largest supplier of smartphone based mobile chips in China, as per a recent market report, which revealed the chipmaker’s popularity in the Chinese market.
A new report from CINNO Research (Via ITHome) that was published earlier this week stated that MediaTek has become China’s largest smartphone chip supplier, despite the Chinese market seeing a decline in 2020. The report states that mobile processor shipments reached just 307 million units, which marks a year on year decline of a sizeable 20.8 percent in comparison to 2019. Furthermore, the market standings of different companies were also listed in the report.

MediaTek took the top spot with a market share of 31.7 percent in the second half of 2020, with a strong jump from 17.9 percent in the first half. Notably, this rise arrives after the decline of Huawei‘s chip unit, HiSilicon, which shrank from 37 percent in the first half of last to 27.2 percent in the second half. Similarly, even Qualcomm saw a decline from 30.8 percent in the first half to 25.4 percent in the second half.
Year on year, the market share of MediaTek nearly doubled when compared to the second half of 2019. On the other hand, both Qualcomm and HiSilicon saw a decline during the same period. One of the reasons for the growing popularity of MediaTek chips is the healthy demand for smartphones within the 100 to 250 US Dollars, especially considering the company’s offerings of affordable 5G chipset for mid range handsets.
