Earlier today (30th March 2021), Samsung Electronics stated that the production of chips in the company’s Austin chip plant in Texas, US, has returned to nearly normal levels as of last week.
For those unaware, the South Korean tech giant and other chip makers with production facilities in the region had seen shutdowns due to the cold wave that had hit the area last month. Although, the company declined to comment on when the production levels would be fully back to normal, as per a Reuters report. These disruptions also had an impact on the global chip contract chip manufacturing industry, which is currently struggling against a severe capacity crunch.
At the moment, the world is facing a major shortage in chip supply with various contract chip makers having their production sites running at full capacity. The shortage of semiconductors has affected a number of industries as well, like the automobile industry, with some companies having to stop production entirely due to a lack of chip supply.
Notably, Qualcomm and Samsung logic chips also account for about 65 percent of the monthly production at the latter’s chip plant. Furthermore, the disruption that occurred last month is expected to impact the production of smartphones globally over the period of April and June by about 5 percent.
