Huawei has just recently announced that it will be expanding its partnership with popular social media platform Viber. The announcement arrives as the smartphone maker saw positive consumer reception of the Viber Messenger app on its AppGallery.

At the moment, the messaging app has hundreds of millions of users in about 190 countries and is one of the first major brands to join the Chinese tech giant’s AppGallery. Furthermore, the app is even one of the most popular in the application store. For those unaware, Viber is a popular messaging and calling app that offers support for both audio and video calls and functions similar to another popular messenger, WhatsApp.

The two companies are now further teaming up to deliver deeper engagement with the growing user base. Notably, the success of the app is part of its plans of embracing Huawei’s “Global + Local” strategy. This had the smartphone maker focus on developing relationships with app providers and developers. Derek Yu, Vice President of Huawei CEE & Nordic at Huawei Consumer Business Group stated that “Lots of popular apps offer global services but these are not always in-sync with users’ local needs.”

Anna Znamenskaya, Chief Growth Officer at Rakuten Viber, also added that “We are very pleased to have such an important market player as Huawei as our partner. We are also glad that its users like our app. The data we receive from Viber downloads shows that our efforts are on the right track and our partnership is paying off. We are confident that our cooperation has a great future!”
