Xiaomi is apparently working on a new smartphone that sports a unique design. A new patent has revealed that the device features a side mounted fingerprint scanner that is housed on a curved display.
According to a 91Mobiles report, the Chinese tech giant filed this design with the United States Patent Application Publication. This patent was filed back on 3rd June 2021 and showcases a smartphone with an edge to edge curved display. In other words, the device might be a premium grade flagship model. One of its most notable features includes a side fingerprint scanner that is housed on the right side where the screen is curved.
The fingerprint sensor is housed underneath the curved display itself instead of a separate housing that is part of the frame. This design is similar to the smartphones like Realme X3 SuperZoom and the Mi 10i. While most curved smartphones sport an AMOLED panel, Xiaomi is aiming at introducing a curved IPS LCD display with a fingerprint scanner mounted on the side. Unfortunately, the patent sketches do not reveal any other design elements regarding this handset.
Furthermore, since the device is still just a patent, so it is unclear if the smartphone maker is actually working on such a product or simply covering all bases. Although, the inclusion of the curved IPS LCD display could mean a major shift for budget and mid range smartphones that do not offer an in display fingerprint sensor.
