Chinese tech giant and Xiaomi eco-chain partner Huami held the Next Beat conference today. Apart from the self-developed Huangshan 2S chip and Zepp OS, the tech giant also announced a new PumpBeats blood pressure monitoring engine.

Hypertension is a silent killer which affects a large number of the individuals cutting across different social strata and race. Wang Kongqiao, Vice President of Algorithm Technology at Huamiduring the conference shared a set of data that shows that as many as 245 million adults are living with hypertension in China.

The new PumpBeats blood pressure monitoring engine is said to have taken Huami 5 years to develop. The engine is capable of measuring the BP in just 30 seconds. PumpBeats can also provide 24-hour continuous blood pressure monitoring as well as data collection, fusion, and AI model establishment around high-precision optical sensors.

Apple has been able to integrate a BP monitoring feature on its smartwatch but that only functions with a medically validated, connected blood pressure monitor. With this new PumpBeats engine, Huami claims users can monitor their blood pressure anytime, anywhere directly from a smartwatch.PumpBeats BP monitoring engine

Huami says the accuracy of the PumpBeats blood pressure monitoring engine has been verified by Peking University First Hospital in Beijing, China. Clinical experiments show that the average absolute deviation of the engine’s systolic blood pressure is lower than 5.14mmHG, and the diastolic blood pressure is lower than 4.88mmHG, the engine is reliable and the blood pressure measurement takes only 30s.

Apart from one-off BP checks, the engine can also provide 24-hour continuous blood pressure monitoring and explore new ways to screen for occult hypertension.

Huami is expected to release a smartwatch donning the PumpBeats engine in Q4 this year.
