Sony has today officially launched its latest smartphone under the Xperia branding — Sony Xperia Pro-I, which is targeted towards the content creators. The highlight is the camera technology, which is developed with the same advanced imaging technology from Sony’s mirrorless Alpha brand cameras, found in the RX100 VII camera.

The newly announced Sony Xperia Pro-I is touted to be the world’s first smartphone to come with a 1.0-type sensor with phase detection. The device comes packed with a 1.0-type Exmor RS sensor with a 2.4µm pixel pitch for impressive low-light performance.

The 1-inch sensor is borrowed from its RX100 VII camera. It supports RAW 12-bit shooting for incredible dynamic range, and dual aperture that goes from f/2.0 to f/4.0 for changing the depth of field. The phone also features a BIONZ X for mobile and a front-end LSI.

The smartphone includes three camera lenses, all of which are enhanced with ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating and a 3D iToF sensor. There’s a newly developed 24mm lens that adopts ZEISS Tessar Optics for delivering high-resolution images with less peripheral image distortion and more intense contrast and sharpness.

The 24mm lens is clubbed with two other sensors — a 12-megapixel 16mm f/2.2 ultrawide sensor and another 12-megapixel 50mm f/2.4 2x optical telephoto lens. Further, the 3D iToF sensor calculates the distance between the camera and the subject to ensure fast and accurate autofocus.

The device also features 315 phase-detection AF points that cover almost 90 percent of the frame. There’s also an AF technology that includes features Real-time Eye-AF in humans and animals, Real-time tracking, 20fps AF/AE burst shooting, and anti-distortion shutter for a cleaner capture of fast-moving objects.

Sony claims the Xperia Pro-I to be the world’s first smartphone allowing users to shoot high-quality video in 4K 120fps and slow-motion video at up to 5x. There’s a monaural microphone next to the main camera for clear speech recording.

There are two physical camera buttons on the device — one is a two-stage shutter key and the other is a circular button that is mapped to launch the Videography Pro app. This app offers advanced controls like white balance, exposure and focus.

Given that the smartphone is aimed at content creators or vloggers, there’s a special Vlog Monitor which is basically a 3.5-inch 720p monitor accessory that can be attached to the phone’s rear, allowing to film users with the new 1.0-inch type camera sensor.

As for the rest of the specifications, the Xperia Pro-I features a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the device comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, coupled with up to 12GB of RAM.

With such advanced camera functions, you will need a good amount of storage and Sony isn’t compromising as it is offering 512GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot allowing you to further expand the storage capacity up to 1TB on the device.

Sony Xperia Pro-I will be available for purchase from December this year, for the price of $1,800 through authorized deals in the United States. It will also be available in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the Nordics.

The company will start taking pre-orders from 28th October. Apart from the smartphone, the Vlog Monitor and Style Cover in Leather will also be available in December 2021 for around $200 and $90, respectively.
