Samsung has launched its latest Foldable flagship in the market dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The device comes with multiple improvements over its predecessor, so let’s take a detailed look at the new foldable.

Design & display

Design-wise, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 look quite similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, however, it is shorter by 3.1mm and also slimmer compared to its predecessor. Other than that, the device is slightly wider, and when combined with the razer thin bezels, it makes for a better aspect ratio of 23:9 for the outer display.

The device has a 6.2-inch exterior display and 7.6-inches interior display panels with a new 10.8:9 aspect ratio, making it more square compared to the 11.2:9 aspect ratio found in its predecessor. The outer display has an HD+ (2316 x 904p) Dynamic AMOLED panel, while the inner display offers a QXGA+ (2176 x 1812p) Dynamic AMOLED panel.

Both displays carry support for a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The inner display has 1,000 nits typical brightness while the outer display and back panel boasts Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection. The frame is made out of aluminum, and the device is 8 grams lighter than the last-gen model.

Under the hood, the device houses Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen Plus SoC which is built on TSMC’s industry-leading 4nm node. The chipset will come paired with up to 12GB RAM LPDDR5 RAM and up to 1TB UFS 3.1 internal storage (depending on region). It has a 4,400mAh battery capacity paired with 25W fast charging. The phone can refill 50% juice with a 30-minute charge time.

On the software side of things, the device has improved a lot compared to the last gen. It has an Android 12L-based UI which now comes with a PC-like Taskbar on the bottom of the device that allows for instant access to recent apps, most used apps, etc. The company has optimized Facebook, Youtube, Netflix, Disney+, and Microsoft Teams to better utilize the foldable form factor, while apps like Microsoft’s Outlook, Office, Teams, and Google Meet now offer tablet-like functionality.

There is also a Flex Mode, which activates with the phone half folded in a laptop-like position. This activates the camera for video calling in apps that support the mode. For those that don’t, it will turn the lower half of the screen into a touchpad and shortcuts bar.

The S Pen also has a new functionality called text extraction, which is essentially a quick and easy way of copying and pasting text by using the S Pen as a highlighter. Connectivity options include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, and USB Type-C port for charging and data sync. The phone has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

Cameras

The camera system on the device has also been upgraded from last year. This time, Fold 4 brings a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS and EIS support, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, support. The device also offers 30x digital zoom which Samsung calls the “Space Zoom”.

The cover side of the device has a 10-megapixel unit (f/2.2) and the under-display camera is the same 4-megapixel unit as last year. It is however better hidden this time around due to the increased pixel density.

Pricing & Availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a starting price of $1,799/€1,800 for the 12GB + 256GB model. The 12GB + 512GB model and the 12GB + 1TB models are priced at €1,920 and €2,160 respectively. Pre-orders are currently open and the first devices will ship on August 25.

The device is currently available in three color options – Phantom Black, Beige, and Graygreen.
