Although MediaTek has designed chipsets for various Chromebooks and budget laptops, the company has yet to release processors that can compete with Apple’s silicon. While MediaTek has mainly focused on developing mobile CPUs, recent reports suggest that the company is now aiming to shift its attention toward high-end laptop processors. As per a tipster, MediaTek is working on a new SoC featuring four Cortex-X4 and four Cortex-A720 cores. This chip is expected to go head-to-head with upcoming offerings such as the Apple M3 and Qualcomm Oryon.

It could be the next Kompanio chip

According to Digital Chat Station, MediaTek could have a powerful laptop CPU in the development. While the marketing name of the chipset is yet to be known, it is said to feature four Hunter ELP (Cortex-X4) and four Hunter (Cortex-A720) with no efficiency cores (Via Notebookcheck). For the unaware, the Cortex-X4 is a new high-performance core that was announced by Arm in 2022. It is designed to offer up to 30% better performance than the previous generation Cortex-X3 core.

The Chipset could be the next iteration in the Kompanio series that MediaTek has planned for Windows laptops, and it may even come with a raytracing-enabled GPU. If MediaTek is successful in developing this new SoC, it could emerge as a major competitor to the upcoming Apple M3 and Qualcomm Oryon. The chip would provide a significant performance boost over MediaTek’s dim laptop chipsets, positioning it favorably against the latest chips from Intel and AMD.

However, it is important to note that MediaTek has not yet officially announced this new SoC. It is even possible that the chip does not exist. We hope to learn more in the coming days.
