Pixel users who use multiple profiles on their phones are facing an old problem again. A storage bug that first showed up in October 2023 has come back, possibly because of the latest Google Play system update in January 2024.

This bug seems to be affecting the majority of the Pixel phones, including the Pixel 5, 6, 7, 8, and even the Pixel Fold. And it’s causing the same troubles as before — the camera app crashing, an empty Files app, missing screenshots, and a sudden lack of storage space even when there should be plenty.

Google Pixel Storage Bug

On the Pixel community forum on Reddit, many users are sharing their frustrations. One user said, “The phone seems to have trouble remembering the location of its own data”.

Another user said they can’t download anything new or save screenshots, calling their phone “completely unusable.” People are clearly upset and need Google to fix this soon.

Fortunately, Google has acknowledged the problem and is currently looking into it, as reported by 9to5Google.

Although there’s no set date for when the fix will be available, it’s worth noting that when this problem first appeared in October, Google released a patch the following month, in November. Given this precedent, it’s reasonable to expect that Google might roll out a fix in the next few days.

If you haven’t yet updated your Pixel with the January 2024 Google Play update, it might be wise to hold off for now. If you’ve already updated and are experiencing this storage issue, try disabling the multiple profiles on your phone to see if it helps.

To check your Pixel phone’s Google Play System update version, go to Security and Privacy > System & Updates > Google Play System Update.
