Apple set a new record by securing the top seven spots in the global smartphone sales chart for 2023, a feat that further cements its dominant market position. According to a report from Counterpoint Research, this is the first time a single brand has achieved such a milestone. The report also noted that Samsung claimed the remaining spots in the top ten, marking a slight improvement from the previous year and showcasing the competitive landscape of the smartphone industry.
The 2023 list placed the Apple iPhone 14 at the very top
The iPhone 14 emerged as the year’s star, with significant sales in the US and China, despite its similarities to the previous model. This slight change didn’t deter Apple fans, who were more inclined towards the more feature-rich iPhone Pro variants. Interestingly, the iPhone 15 series, launched later in the year, quickly climbed to the top of the sales charts, which further sheds light on consumer enthusiasm for the latest launches.
Despite a stable sales performance from Apple, the overall market saw a shift towards higher-end models and a notable increase in smartphone market share, reaching a record 20%. This growth is partly attributed to Apple’s expanding footprint in emerging markets like India and the Middle East, with India notably crossing the 10 million iPhone sales mark for the first time.
Samsung’s presence in the top ten with its A series models highlights the importance of offering value in competitive and diverse global markets. The Galaxy A14 5G, in particular, made a splash in India, becoming the best-selling smartphone of the year.
