Huawei‘s new flagship, the Pura 70 series, boasts a remarkable achievement: over 90% of its components are sourced from Chinese companies, except for the highest-end model’s main camera. This signifies a significant leap towards complete domestication in Huawei’s smartphone manufacturing.

Chinese Smartphone Manufacturing Nears Self-Sufficiency with Huawei Pura 70

Teardown analyses by Japanese research firm Fomalhaut Techno Solutions reveal that Chinese suppliers like OFilm, Lens Technology, Goertek, Csun, Sunny Optical, BOE, and Crystal-Optech are now providing the core components for most Pura 70 models, including processors, displays, chassis, batteries, and more.

Only the most advanced processor (Kirin 9010) and the main camera in the top-tier Pura 70 Ultra remain reliant on foreign technology due to limitations in wafer fabrication. With advancements in chip fabrication and camera technology, this goal is likely to be reached in the near future.

Honor and Huawei have achieved remarkable popularity in their home market of China, securing the top spot in smartphone market share according to IDC’s Q1 2024 report. The immense popularity of the Pura 70 series has led to a surge in demand, causing stock shortages in major channels and price increases on the secondary market.

Industry estimates predict strong performance for Huawei this year, with potential smartphone shipments reaching 50 million units. The Pura 70 model is believed to be a significant driver of this success, with sales exceeding tens of millions alone.

The Pura 70 series signifies a significant step towards complete domestic manufacturing for Huawei. The phones showcase the growing capability of Chinese companies to supply crucial smartphone components, relying on a limited number of high-end imports.

This trend suggests a potential future where the entire smartphone manufacturing process within China becomes fully nationalized, potentially impacting the global smartphone supply chain and reshaping the industry landscape.
