Motorola unveiled the Edge 50 in India last week as the brand’s latest mid range option. It aims to be an all rounder with capable specs and features. But this is a competitive segment which Chinese brand often dominate. So how does the Edge 50 stack up against another popular alternative, the Oppo Reno 12? Here’s a quick comparison.

1. Design & Display

Motorola Edge 50

Oppo announced the Reno 12 with an All-Round Armour protection for resistance against drops and impacts. It also employs an alloy framework for a sturdy build and an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance. However, the Chinese company uses a plastic frame and plastic back panel. The front sports a tall 6.7-inch OLED FHD+ curved AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1200 nits of peak brightness, HDR10+ support, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. This panel is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 7i.

On the other hand, the Motorola Edge 50 arrives with a higher IP68 rating for water and dust resistance as well as MIL-STD-810H compliant. In other words, it has received military certification. The rear has an eco leather finish while the sides have a metallic frame for a more premium feel. This model also has a 6.7-inch OLED display along with support for a 120hz refresh rate, HDR10+, 1900 nits of peak brightness, SGS Blue Light Reduction certification, Smart Water Touch technology, and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Under the hood, Motorola equips the Edge 50 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, which is paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. For software, it runs on the Android 14 OS based Hello UI as well as Google AI for features like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Magic Editor. Motorola also employs its own AI enhancements on the Edge 50. A large 5,000mAh battery pack powers this device, which supports 68W wired fast charging, 15W wireless charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging. Other notable features include Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res audio, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

In comparison, the Oppo Reno 12 features the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Energy processor that is coupled with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Unlike the Edge 50, users can expand the storage via a microSDXC card. It also runs on the Android 14 OS based ColorOS 14 custom skin out of the box. Oppo unveiled the Reno 12 series with various AI powered features. There’s AI Eraser 2.0, AI Clear Face, AI Best Face, AI Smart Image Matting 2.0, and AI Studio. A sizeable 5,000mAh cell powers this device, with 8-W wired fast charging. There is also an IR Blaster, in-display fingerprint scanner, and dual speakers.

3. Camera

For photography, the Edge 50 features a 50MP primary camera with Sony’s Lytia 700C sensor, a 10MP 3x telephoto shooter, and a 13MP ultra-wide lens. On the front, there is a 13MP camera for selfies and video calls. The Reno 12 also comes with a triple-lens rear setup with a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor, and a 50MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom. For selfies, the device houses a 32MP camera.

4. Pricing and Verdict

Oppo launched the Reno 12 with a 32,999 INR price tag for the sole 8GB + 256GB configuration. This makes it noticeably more expensive than the Motorola Edge 50, which costs 27,999 INR for the same storage option. These two models are quite comparable in terms of specs and performance. But the design and pricing are what make the Motorola Edge 50 a great choice for those who don’t wish to spend more than 30,000 INR.
