Remember the whispers of a super-slim iPhone 17 “Air” or “Slim”? Well, a recent announcement from a Taiwanese display manufacturer might just add some fuel to that fire.
A Taiwanese company called Novatek recently announced they’ll start producing OLED displays using a new process called Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI).
As the name suggests, this display will combine the touch sensor layer with the display driver into one unit. This might seem like a minor tweak, but it could have a big impact on phone thickness. By ditching a separate layer, manufacturers can shave precious millimeters off the overall phone thickness.
iPhone 17 Air / Slim may use TDDI OLED display
Now, a report from DigiTimes suggests that Apple could be among Novatek’s first customers for the TDDI display. And it’s easy to see why.
We’ve been hearing rumors of a super-thin iPhone 17 Air (or Slim), expected to replace the “Plus” model. The new TDDI display could help Apple reduce the phone’s size and achieve the slimness it’s aiming for.
However, it’s not a guaranteed match. DigiTimes suggests that Apple might test the tech on other devices first, like future iPads or Apple Watches. Maybe even the much-rumored foldable iPhone or iPad could benefit from this new display tech.

So, what else do we know about the iPhone 17 Air/Slim? According to previous reports, it will have a 6.6” display with both Dynamic Island and 120Hz ProMotion support.
For performance, it may get Apple’s next-gen A19 chip, which is expected to be built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm process. A report in August also tipped that Apple could upgrade the selfie camera on the entire iPhone 17 series, replacing the 12MP lens with a high-res 24MP shooter.
If the rumors are accurate, the iPhone 17 Slim won’t be cheap. It’s expected to be the most expensive model in the series, with a starting price of around $1,299. By comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to be priced at $1,099 and $1,199, respectively.
