Apple has officially addressed the class-action lawsuit alleging that some Apple Watch bands contain harmful levels of “forever chemicals” known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The company firmly stated that all its watch bands undergo strict quality testing and meet regulatory safety standards, assuring users that they are safe for everyday wear.

Apple Responds to PFAS Concerns in Watch Bands
In a statement shared by Macrumors, Apple emphasized its commitment to user safety: “Users can wear Apple Watch bands with confidence and safety. Before the Apple Watch leaves the factory, it undergoes rigorous testing. Additionally, we collaborate with independent laboratories to conduct thorough analysis of the materials used in our products, including Apple Watch bands.”
This response comes amid rising scrutiny following a lawsuit filed in California, which claims that Apple’s Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band contain hazardous levels of PFAS. Often referred to as “forever chemicals,” PFAS are widely used for their resistance to water and oils but are linked to severe health risks, including cancer, immune system suppression, and developmental harm.
Research from the University of Notre Dame in 2024 identified elevated PFAS levels in multiple smartwatch bands, including some from Apple. The study highlighted the potential for these chemicals to penetrate the skin during exercise, with sweat and open pores increasing absorption risks.
Apple previously pledged in 2022 to eliminate PFAS from its products and acknowledged the challenges involved in finding alternatives that meet its stringent performance requirements. Despite this pledge, the lawsuit accuses the company of knowingly selling bands containing PFAS while failing to inform consumers about the potential dangers.
The legal battle has prompted Apple to reiterate its commitment to safety and transparency. Critics have continued to call for tighter regulations and safer manufacturing practices. Consumers seeking alternatives may want to explore PFAS-free or silicone bands for added safety.
