After getting discontinued years ago, Pebble smartwatches might be making a comeback. This return is thanks to Google’s recent announcement to make Pebble OS open source, which would revive the series entirely. But before we look ahead, let’s see what made Pebble and its smartwatches so special.

1. E-Paper Display for Long Battery Life
Unlike modern smartwatches that rely on OLED or LCD screens, Pebble used an e-paper display similar to e-readers like Amazon Kindle. This provided several advantages like Always-on visibility for notifications at a glance, which made it ahead of its time. Back in 2016, the Pebble smartwatch could offers up to 7 days of battery life that surpassed the competition. The e-ink panel also enabled better readibility in outdoors, although, you did lack visual fidelity of a high resolution color screen.
2. Cross-Platform Compatibility
During the early days of smartwatches, some model were locked into their specific ecosystems like the first Apple Watch with iPhones. However, Pebble broke this mold by bringing full compatibility with both iOS and Android. This meant you got a consistent user experience regardless of the platform. So the Pebble smartwatch was a flexible option for those who didn’t want to be tied to a single ecosystem.
3. Customizable Software and Open-Source Community
Pebble’s OS was highly customizable, which allowed users to install thousands of different third party watch faces and apps from the Pebble App Store. People could even create their own applications using the open source SDK. The firmware could also be modified to add new features.
4. Early Use of Smart Notifications
Before mainstream smartwatches perfected the smart notification system we are all fond of today, Pebble brought seamless integration with a smartphone. You could not only display calls, but also offer receive texts and app alerts. You weren’t just seeing these notifications, Pebble allowed users to dismiss or even respond using preset messages.
5. Pebble’s Lasting Legacy
Despite its eventual discontinuation, Pebble’s impact on the smartwatch industry remains undeniable. Pebble smartwatches were special because they focused on practicality, efficiency, and user freedom. Their long battery life, open software, and minimalist design made them a favorite among tech enthusiasts. Its influence can still be seen in modern smartwatches. But with news of its revival looming, the existing devices could be revived while newer models might be in the works.
