Nintendo has officially announced that its highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 Direct will take place on April 2, 2025, at 6 a.m. PST. This presentation is expected to provide a deeper look into the upcoming console, following its initial reveal in January.

Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

The Switch 2 marks eight years since the launch of the original Switch, and while Nintendo has kept many details under wraps, recent leaks and teasers have given fans a glimpse of what to expect. The new console reportedly retains the hybrid design of its predecessor but features a larger 8-inch display, an upgrade from the original 6.2-inch screen. While the screen type hasn’t been revealed, an OLED upgrade is possible, and 1080p resolution may replace the existing 720p.

The Joy-Con controllers have also undergone notable changes, including a revised attachment mechanism that replaces the sliding rail system with a magnetic connection, making them easier to detach. The kickstand is now wider and fully adjustable, similar to the Switch OLED model.

Another key upgrade is the inclusion of an optical sensor on the side of the Joy-Con, which could enable a ‘mouse mode’ feature, potentially expanding gameplay possibilities. A second USB-C port has also been spotted, likely for improved peripheral support and charging. Additionally, Nintendo appears to have addressed one of the biggest complaints about the original Joy-Con, the notorious joystick drift, by upgrading to Hall effect sensors for improved durability and precision.

While Nintendo has yet to confirm the full hardware specifications, rumors suggest the Switch 2 will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra processor built on Samsung’s 8nm process. The upcoming Direct is also expected to shed light on the launch lineup of games, with strong speculation that a new Mario Kart installment will be among the first titles.

The biggest remaining questions revolve around the console’s performance capabilities, the purpose of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, and whether the device will support new connectivity options. Tipsters and some retailers predict the Switch 2 will be priced around $400. With the launch expected between June and September, April’s Nintendo Direct should finally provide much-needed answers.
