A new leak suggests that Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro models could take a step back in durability compared to the iPhone 16 Pro models. According to a report, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max could ditch the titanium frames used in the last two generations of Pro iPhones in favor of aluminum.
However, the rumored iPhone 17 Air model could still get a titanium frame, which is expected to replace the plus model.

A shift back to aluminum
In an investor note obtained by MacRumors, Apple supply chain analyst Jeff Pu revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to feature aluminum frames instead of titanium.
Switching back to aluminum will mean the iPhone 17 Pro models will be less durable than not only its predecessors but also the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and possibly the upcoming Ultra flagship from the brand as well.
During an accidental drop onto a concrete-like surface, aluminum generally gets scuffs while titanium does not suffer from any considerable damage.
But why would Apple do this?
According to Pu, Apple’s decision to switch to aluminum is driven by environmental considerations. Aluminum has a lower carbon footprint compared to titanium, and Apple is reportedly working toward its goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its products and supply chain by 2030.
This could be one of the reasons behind switching back to aluminum. As MacRumors notes, the company could market the iPhone 17 models as their first carbon-neutral iPhones. Titanium’s durability also makes it harder to work with, which could be another reason behind this speculated switch back to aluminum.
Nonetheless, this is still a rumor, and readers are suggested to take it with a pinch of salt.
