Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch a new Mac Studio powered by the M3 Ultra chip, alongside the highly anticipated M4 MacBook Air. The news comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This unexpected addition to Apple’s lineup comes as a surprise, especially since the Mac Studio has not been updated since the M2 Ultra model.
A surprise addition to the lineup
Apple has already unveiled the M3 iPad Air and 11th-gen iPad with upgraded storage and an A16 chip. And only now, the Cupertino-based giant is preparing to refresh its desktop lineup.

The new Mac Studio is expected to feature the M3 Ultra chip, rather than the next-generation M4 Ultra, which, according to Gurman, is reserved for a future Mac Pro.
The M3 Ultra is expected to deliver significant performance gains over the already impressive M2 Ultra. This chip will likely maintain Apple’s lead over competitors like AMD, whose Ryzen AI Max 395 Plus (based on Strix Halo) may compete with the M3 Max but could struggle to match the M3 Ultra’s raw power.
M4 MacBook Air takes center stage, though
Alongside the Mac Studio, Apple is set to launch the M4 MacBook Air. The M4 chip is expected to bring improved efficiency and performance, further solidifying Apple’s position in the laptop market.

But why the M3 Ultra for Mac Studio? Well, Apple’s decision to equip the Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra instead of the M4 Ultra may seem unusual, but it aligns with the company’s strategy of reserving its most advanced chips for high-end products like the Mac Pro. That said, the M3 Ultra will still offer cutting-edge performance.
With the new Mac Studio and M4 MacBook Air expected to launch soon, Apple will certainly push the boundaries of performance and showcase how much is possible with minimal power consumption and fan noise.
