Samsung is getting ready to launch the Galaxy A17 5G later this year. The main upgrade is optical image stabilization (OIS) on the rear camera, a first for the A1x series. Samsung plans to use a spring-based OIS system that costs 20% less than regular OIS setups, making it affordable for an entry-level phone. The company is hoping this feature will help the A17 stand out from other budget phones.

While the camera gets an upgrade, the chipset stays the same. The Galaxy A17 5G has shown up on Geekbench with the Exynos 1330, the same chip used in the Galaxy A14 5G and A16 5G. It’s a 5nm chip with two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.4GHz, six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz, and a Mali-G68 MP2 GPU. This means performance will likely be similar to the last two models.

The phone supports LPDDR4X and LPDDR5 RAM. The tested unit had 6GB RAM, but other versions may offer 4GB or 8GB, like the A16 5G. It also supports both UFS 2.2 and UFS 3.1 storage. The chip can run displays at 1080p+ with up to 120Hz refresh rate, but previous A1x models have only offered up to 90Hz, and that might not change. The software is Android 15 with One UI 7.
In short, the Galaxy A17 5G brings a better camera to Samsung’s budget range, but keeps the same performance.
